Folks ... there's a REASON that "runway" got so torn up ...

Last edited Sat Oct 29, 2016, 03:36 PM - Edit history (1)

The material past the end of the runway proper is sort of like a car's "crumple zone" -- it's sacrificed to absorb energy in an emergency, taking a lot of damage to prevent other damage elsewhere. It's known as an arrestor bed, or EMAS.

Just more behind-the-scenes intrusion by Big Government. It's everywhere! And Mike Pence should be grateful.

(ETA: I just now noticed that the writing on that black strip says "NO STEP", which seems a little ironic at this point.)

talking about how regulations are killing his business. I was thinking regulations like those associated with food safety.

NASA invented this (air dam) for semi-trucks

and tested various designs in this

which has a wind tunnel test section like this

And the savings to the trucking industry in terms of fuel costs more than pays for the NASA budget every year. And that is just one NASA invention.

I get so tired about hearing that Tang is the only thing that comes from the space program.

alongside the roads on downhill stretches.

?600x450

It's a "safe" way for trucks whose brakes have failed to stop that doesn't endanger other traffic on the road.

At first I was all, "Hmm. Look at that."

And after a half-second I was like, "Ooooooh. Nice!"

I like when that happens.

I hadn't seen it adapted to airports before, but it makes sense.

Assuming they have room, that is. As I understand, that is one of the more dangerous and difficult airports in the country, and from what I've heard, Trump was searching for discounts when he hired his aircrews.

in 1960. Here a the link to the story:

http://archives.chicagotribune.com/1960/09/15/page/58/article/electra-flips-over-in-n-y-76-escape-fire

The plane flipped over several times and came to rest on its roof. Everyone was suspended from their seat belts. The impact knocked my father out. My mother was able to get out of her seat belt and dropped down. According to my mother, she looked up at my father and knew that if she tried to unfasten him, he would fall on her. She said to herself "we have 3 kids at home, I have to get out." The plane was filling with smoke has she headed to the door. She had on a red suit. My father came to, got himself down and spotted the red suit through the smoke. He followed it out. My mother lost her handbag in the crash but managed to hold on to her pair of white gloves. A few months later, a man from the airline showed up at our door with the charred, but intact, handbag. My parents received $2,000 for their trouble. They gave it to the church.

My father got back on a plane the next week but my mother wouldn't fly for years. Finally, when she and I were looking at colleges, I talked her in to flying home from Washington DC rather than taking a train. We had a 10 am flight. She got on the plane and insisted on sitting next to a door. When the stewardess asked her if she needed anything else she said "yes, a scotch please."
