Could this backfire on the Republicans?

Maybe so?

Those that are willing to look more closely at the charges do not see much there, except perhaps a partisan ploy to help the flailing Donald Trump.

Those that are willing to listen to Donald Trump's version of events will probably look no further. They will believe it is "worse than Watergate".

Voters, Democrats and Republicans, are tired of the obstruction and blocking of our government functions, including voting on Supreme Court Justices and other important matters. They may see this as just a continuation of the politics that they have decried for so long?

It is a gamble by Republicans. It may blow up in their faces. If it did, they would be deserving.

Now, I admit that my twitter is exclusively Democrats, but boy are they fired up. It seems Hillary people are pissed off, wanting to work even harder, and a lot of them donated money yesterday. I predict it will be a huge fundraising day.

I think Comey is basically a straight shooter, but also very politically naive and likes the camera and "Elliot Ness" effect a little too much. He should not have gone public in July, but he did, and now he had no choice but to make this statement. It is his own fault for not letting the process run, but I don't think he is an anti-Hillary hack.

...when he said no rational prosecutor would pursue a case against Hillary...

But then, in very ambiguous comments, left a lot of doubts with Republicans to pursue it further.

This was the final straw for those folks that were willing to trust him. He looks like a weak, partisan shill.

I don't think this will make much of a difference. Either the email shit already mattered to someone, or it didn't.

Minds are already made up, this is just a media circus.

It has the appearance of being a partisan dirty trick so anyone other than Trump worshippers might view it as trying to influence the election.

These are no people who are undecided because they're driven to know every last thing about the candidates; they're undecided because they're only marginally interested.

Media has not exposed Comey's partisanship enough. But his actions now are clearly so inappropriate that Dems and media should raise hell about his Repub leanings now that he has taken such unprecedented unethical action right before election.

They'd be saying that he can't do his job due to being partial. The double standard is sickening.

It's funny how we perceive things!

And I agree with you, there is just as much a chance that this backfires; but most likely it will just fade away because people have already made up their minds.
