I detect a white middle aged male asshole. I recognize the type.
North Carolina is on the verge of dumping our current tea party moran governor and ousting our right wing senator. We have a chance to elect a Democratic governor and tip the U. S. Senate to the Democrats.
And along comes the head of the FBI - who reports to Attorney General Loretta Lynch - to cause havoc in the election 11 days out.
Coincidence? I think not.

Ninni Laaksonen, a former Miss Finland in the Miss Universe competition that Trump once owned, alleged in an interview with the Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat that Trump groped her before an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman in 2006.
Before the show we were photographed outside the building, Laaksonen said, according to a translation provided by The Telegraph. Trump stood right next to me and suddenly he squeezed my butt. He really grabbed my butt.
I dont think anybody saw it but I flinched and thought: What is happening?
Laaksonen said that she had been told at other events that year that Trump found her attractive because she reminded him of his wife, Melania, whom he had married the year before.
Somebody told me there that Trump liked me because I looked like Melania when she was younger, Laaksonen said. It left me disgusted.

So, I'm expecting to see his resignation very soon. President Obama has every right to ask for it to be delivered.

The FBIs activities are closely and regularly scrutinized by a variety of entities. Congressthrough several oversight committees in the Senate and Housereviews the FBIs budget appropriations, programs, and selected investigations. The results of FBI investigations are often reviewed by the judicial system during court proceedings. Within the U.S. Department of Justice, the FBI is responsible to the attorney general, and it reports its findings to U.S. Attorneys across the country. The FBIs intelligence activities are overseen by the Director of National Intelligence.

So, no matter what services the FBI provides to the other branches of government. The President is Comey's boss.
The oversight provided by Congress is limited to the FUNDING of the FBI and other executive branch agencies including the military. The Congress has their own investigative service.

(33,047 posts)From the Congressional Research Service's report I posted above.
The Director of the FBI serves "at the pleasure of the President" and can be removed at any time by the President without cause (that's what 'no statutory conditions' means). There are no guarantees and it's only for a single term of "up to" 10 years. It's NOT a life-time appointment to the Supreme Court which is listed separately in The Constitution and requires an Impeachment by Congress to end early.
Really, we need to study up on the US Separation of Powers in civics classes.
That said, President Obama shouldn't "fire" Comey at this time. But, he should certainly state clearly his displeasure at Comey's appearance of partisan political activity and strongly suggest he submit his resignation.

(31,936 posts)The poster you are replying to is wrong. It has to be for cause. The Director is appointed for 10 years. Congress passed that term so it would reach beyond any given president. Can only be fired for cause or impeached by Congress.

(33,047 posts)The only bit of information I've seen is an authoritative report published by the CRS in 2014. Which, I'm going to believe over a bunch of people on DU or the Internet.
Never-the-less, A violation of the Hatch Act is surely cause enough for Comey's ultimate dismissal. So, as of now the point is moot.

(118 posts)The FBI director does not take orders from the attorney general, and even in the case of the President, there is a level of independence statutorily embedded (FBI director can only be fired for cause - e.g Sessions).
