(44,996 posts)His political career is probably over.
Maybe Comey can get a job on Trump TV hawking Pocket Fishermen,
Vege-matics and Fried Pork Rinds to Alt-Idiots.

(4,359 posts)I loved my pocket fisherman as a kid and I will not have you disparage it.
It had a compartment for everything you needed AND folded up to fit into the glove box!

(111,069 posts)There is no love lost between he and Hillary. I suppose he may have thought that he was gone anyway if Hillary won the election so why not do as much damage as he can while he still has a few days. His superior, the Attorney General, told him not to do it and he did it anyway. Pretty much a low life thing to do.

(32 posts)Unfortunately thus far he's the one thing that has ultimately stood between Clinton and the GOP witch hunt. Makes it tougher to give him his walking papers.

(32 posts)As someone stated on another thread, he agreed under oath that he would reopen the case if new evidence presented. There's no doubt as to the timing of the "new evidence", but his hand may very well have been forced here. It's also better to hash this out now than to wait until after because then the GOP could add collusion with the FBI to their list of possible witch hunts.

(5,268 posts)His announcement could have been delayed just 11 more days, but he ignored advice of Justice Dept, Atty General to wait and took it upon himself to jump into election fray knowing that his vague statement would be misinterpreted and exaggerated and cause harm to one candidate who could not defend against innuendo this close to end of heated campaign.
Yes, he agreed under oath to reopen if new evidence presented, but ethics and precedent should have caused him to delay announcing the additional review until after election to avoid influencing election.
If he was criticized for waiting and covering up, he could have merely said Justice Dept advised him not to announce because of longstanding past practice and precedent of not reporting such reviews so close to an election.
Quite obvious he is a partisan Republican who donated to McCain and Romney and knows his days were numbered as FBI chief anyway so he decided to help out the Senate and Congressional GOP before Hillary becomes Pres.

(32 posts)By waiting until after the election the case could also have been made that he was trying to influence the election. He's had plenty of opportunity to put the screws to her if he wanted, and hasn't done it so far. I think that getting this out before the election what's best for Hillary. There's no coming in after the election crying about collusion now, because you know it would have happened. Hell it's probably what they wanted. They were probably lookint forward to hoping on this the day after the election. They just got the rug pulled out from underneath them.

It would be politically bad for President Obama to "fire" Comey right now, but, he could certainly say he's lost confidence in the impartiality of Comey and ask that he step down.

(31,963 posts)A president can only remove a director for "adequate cause". President Clinton dismissed Director William Sessions halfway through his term on charges that Sessions misused official resourcessuch as using FBI aircraft for personal trips. Nothing Comey has done would meet that standard. Congress can impeach but that won't happen.
