5. The first place to look would be "Open Secrets"

That is a terrific site to check out members of congress and how they spend their budgets. I checked my local congressman, a tea party guy and found him paying consultant fees to a LLC that had ties to him. I even wrote to a consumer advocate group, I think it was Common Cause but it was a long time ago. They wrote back and asked for more details but never followed up. However, that site is a great place to start.
