Heated Political Debates Banned From Part Of Long Island Hospital

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — One Long Island hospital has banned heated political debates in their cardio rehab unit’s gym.

When you walk into the gym at Southampton Hospital there is a large pink sign that reads, “Due to the fact that we have patients with heart conditions, we cannot allow political debates in the gym,” WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reported.

Manager Jessica Swiatocha said she posted the sign after she saw patients getting upset in heated debates over the presidential election.

She said it could be bad for their hearts.

They caused too many arguments and fights.

Anybody trying to talk about politics or religion is asked to leave, forced if they refuse to leave.

Cardiac patients are trying to rehabilitate after heart attacks, for example, and arguments about politics can put them in mortal danger.

unless it was a patient with a copy of The Nation (even then, it was more about the cryptic crossword) or if a coworker asked my opinion on something. Then it would be quick and quiet. I did work in cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery so there is no way I'd get into a heated discussion about anything there.

The only time I did argue politics with a patient was when I worked in a nursing home. One of the patients had been a prominent speechwriter. I knew his wife socially, so I was on firm ground there. People thought I was being mean to that old man until I pointed out that on the nights I'd pick a fight with him, he'd pad into the bathroom, brush his teeth, put his own pajamas on, and get a really good night's sleep. No argument meant they had to sedate him and wrestle him into bed.
