Police transparency

The text an article linked below are about pending legislation in Pennsylvania but similar legislation may be in the works elsewhere and I suggest working against it.

Many police agencies in Cumberland County have been forthcoming with requests from The Sentinel for use of force data, including identifying the officers involved.

Pennsylvania may be moving away from that idea.

Pennsylvania House Bill 1538, which passed the House and faces second consideration in the Senate, would prohibit the release of the identity of a law enforcement officer involved in a “use of force” that results in serious injury or death.

Under the amended proposal unless criminal charges are filed, police may release identity information only if the officer consents, 30 days have passed, or after a completed official investigation. Even then, a name can still be withheld....
