(174 posts)He's not perfect, I don't agree with everything he says. He needs to modernize his views on women priests, birth control. Nevertheless as a lapsed Catholic, I find him inspirational.

who are getting told from their parish pulpits that the only "Catholic" choice is to vote for a candidate who'll outlaw abortion, and that any other positions are relatively unimportant.

(18,229 posts)It confirms my confidence in Francis as a man who believes that social justice is paramount.
Last week at my parish church, a thinly veiled endorsement of candidate Trump in the form of a "voting guidance letter" written by our bishop was read from the pulpit.
I was shocked and appalled until I remembered that the bishop who wrote the letter had played a major role in the cover up of child sexual abuse by priests in the cases that the movie Spotlight made famous. (He was so high up that he could have been portrayed in the film.) He's exactly the type of sanctimonious phony who would endorse a candidate with no moral compass in order to prevent the evil (i.e. female) Hillary from taking office.
The bishop's only punishment was exile from the Boston prelate to my very pedestrian diocese. None of us were happy.
