If we make through this Trump administration with a huge terrorist attack, another war in the Middle East, inept handling of a natural disaster, and an economic collapse on the same scale as the Great Depression, then we should consider ourselves damn lucky.
Bush II was horrific, but Trump is far, far worse. I'm not optimistic in the slightest regard. I have no hope that he will moderate. In fact, I know that he will not moderate. I know that he will be awful, and we as a nation may never recover.
My advice is prepare for the worst. The very worst. Protect yourself and your family to the best of your ability. Support those in need and be active every single day.
Things are going to get bad, really, really, really bad.

(16,299 posts)that's my prediction.
He might not start any wars, but he's going to gut the government, think Reagan on steroids.

(26,259 posts)And he has a VP who, IMHO, is equal in evil to Cheney, to run the show for him. In fact, Pence is probably, in some ways, even more vile.

(34,845 posts)Already the Mexican Wall is gone. Obamacare has some good aspects. And Ryan getting rid of Medicare looks DOA. They don't know how to win so they will continue to flail about angrily, and keep losing.
I think we will see the most blunders on foreign policy but that sure won't do the economy any good, either.

(34,845 posts)Just like with Obamacare, they talk about it but have no specifics and no way to get from Point A to Point B.
If they come up with anything -and I don't think they can- it will be vastly more expensive and no one's going to sign up for that.

(34,845 posts)And Josh Marshall pointed out that GOP reps are refusing to comment on it because there is no plan as yet. I don't think they will be able to get anything together that won't utterly bankrupt the country. And there are enough level-headed GOPers that they won't vote to self-immolate.

(13,081 posts)I'm actually keeping a running list in my wallet at all times of shit Trump has already backed down on, just so I can throw it in his supporters' faces.
The wall is downgraded to a fence (there's already a fence).
His deportation plan is literally Obama's exact same deportation plan.
He's backed down on Obamacare
He and McConnell realized that natural gas is cheaper than coal and coal mining jobs aren't coming back.

(34,845 posts)Haven't heard anything about that recently, have we?

(4,423 posts)There will be a crisis of some sort pretty quickly after the inauguration, before the new administration has a chance to get whatever tiny bit of shit they have together. It will be geared to cause a major mistake on our (Trump's) part. I have no doubt it will work.
If it involves a massive and foolish military overreaction, we can only hope that the Joint Chiefs have the guts to say no. At the very least that will trigger a constitutional crisis the like of which has never been seen in this country.
We live in interesting times.

(90,335 posts)... Donald Putin?
I will never unite behind hate, I'll give Putin a chance but only slightly more than they gave Obama which was damn near none.

abuse executive office power in an insane and illegal way, break the government, and have a record number of appointees indicted.
Just a wild guess. I want to get this prediction in early.

(58,647 posts)he's a suit. Not much more IMHO.
The problem is that he won't be able to stand up to the extremist RW agendas he will face. The real politicians will lead him around by the nose, and every single bad thing the Repubs want to do will be on the docket, and many will pass.

(60,010 posts)but also to Putin.
And a lot of shit is being stirred up in the ME right now as various states and factions try to position themselves for the change in our Gov.
Plus, Trump has one playbook ( I have read a lot about him this week)
extract wealth at the expense of other people even if it means bankrupting them.
He is gonna milk every asset he can find as Pres.

WASHINGTON, DCMere days from assuming the presidency and closing the door on eight years of Bill Clinton, president-elect George W. Bush assured the nation in a televised address Tuesday that "our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is finally over."
President-elect Bush vows that "together, we can put the triumphs of the recent past behind us."
"My fellow Americans," Bush said, "at long last, we have reached the end of the dark period in American history that will come to be known as the Clinton Era, eight long years characterized by unprecedented economic expansion, a sharp decrease in crime, and sustained peace overseas. The time has come to put all of that behind us."
Bush swore to do "everything in [his] power" to undo the damage wrought by Clinton's two terms in office, including selling off the national parks to developers, going into massive debt to develop expensive and impractical weapons technologies, and passing sweeping budget cuts that drive the mentally ill out of hospitals and onto the street.
During the 40-minute speech, Bush also promised to bring an end to the severe war drought that plagued the nation under Clinton, assuring citizens that the U.S. will engage in at least one Gulf War-level armed conflict in the next four years.
"You better believe we're going to mix it up with somebody at some point during my administration," said Bush, who plans a 250 percent boost in military spending. "Unlike my predecessor, I am fully committed to putting soldiers in battle situations. Otherwise, what is the point of even having a military?"
