(12,635 posts)They're Cool and Edgy - building up absurd and ignorant beliefs to literally unbelievable, impossible proportions, then laughing at any rube that falls for their obviously tall tales and made up stories.
A couple decades ago I read an interview somewhere with the guy who originated a syndicated column under the pen name "Ed Anger" - he was a self-proclaimed "liberal in the Bobby Kennedy mold", who admitted to playing the part of a magazine Archie Bunker to expose the ignorance in the rantings of the John Birchers for entertainment. He was constantly surprised at the amount of people who took him seriously, and said he often found himself downplaying the political side of his rants and playing up comments exposing his character as a sullen, ignorant crazy uncle to be made fun of during periods of social unrest in an attempt not to be involved with things getting out of hand.
The problem is with these "fake news" contrarians - they never really learned satire properly; they don't seem to understand it's a character they're playing, it's not about them. And they take their personal pride way too seriously to allow themselves to be laughed at. And without that self-depreciating laughter, there's nothing to indicate what they're saying isn't real...
And that's what decades of a lack of solid Liberal Arts training in high school gets you...
