Minnesota Elects First Somali-American Female Legislator



“For me, this is my country, this is for my future, for my children’s future and for my grandchildren’s future"



Although the U.S. did not elect its first female president Tuesday night, one woman still made history.

Former refugee Ilhan Omar, who proudly wears the hijab, became America’s first Somali-American Muslim woman legislator after she claimed a strong victory in the Minnesota House race.

The 34-year-old moved to the U.S. at the age of 12, after four years living in a Kenyan refugee camp following her escape from the Somali civil war, the Star Tribune reports. As well as her political duties, she is director of policy at Women Organizing Women Network—a group that aims to empower all women, particularly first and second generation immigrants, to become engaged citizens and community leaders.

(CNN) — The highest -- and toughest -- glass ceiling remains unshattered.

This year's presidential election ultimately was not kind to Hillary Clinton, the first female presidential nominee for a major party, but down-ballot, some of the election's female candidates made history.

From the Senate and the House to statehouses across the country, female challengers won office. The US Senate will welcome four new female members.


"I know we have still not shattered that highest and hardest glass ceiling, but someday, someone will, and hopefully sooner than we might think right now," Clinton said in her concession speech Wednesday.

And for some women who were running, the words rang true.

Zena Stephens became the first black female sheriff ever elected in the Lone Star State.


The Senate

The Senate will see the first female biracial senators, the first Latina senator and the first Thai-born senator.



Former California Attorney General Kamala Harris becomes the state's first senator of Indian descent -- and the country's first black female senator since 1999. She succeeds Barbara Boxer. The Democrat, along with Duckworth, is biracial, another first for the national legislature. Her mother is Indian, and her father is from Jamaica.

The level of crazy is off the charts. The level of power-hungry ignorance of the crazy is impossible to ignore. If these guys come up strong we will have a clear enemy and path to reform. I just hope it doesn't take too long because I am over sixty and really want to see my grandchildren flourish.

8. There are a lot of Muslims in Minnesota

I had a very close Muslim friend when I lived/worked in L. A. We were as close as brothers.
He moved to Minneapolis around 1986 because of the large Muslim community there.
The last I heard he was working on his doctorate in nearby Fargo, ND.

Also, isn't Keith Ellison from Minnesota?
I think he's one of two Muslim members of the U.S. House.
