It was the song the family sang on stage at a Nazi sponsored competition after which they slipped out went over the mountain and got out of Nazi occupied Austria. This is all based on a true story , Captain Von Trapp was, as his title reflects an Austrian military man. The movie is loosely based but follows the general story of the Von Trapp family singers who ultimately came to the US and open to ski lodge in I think Vermont

that flick in decades, I used to know every note though not the scenes in the movie itself. I knew it had to be something to do with its placement in the movie... the lyrics don't indicate the significance alone.
