RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin invited his Philippine counterpart Rodrigo Duterte to visit Russia, after the two leaders held their inaugural meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Coorporation (APEC) Leaders Meeting in Lima, Peru, over the weekend.
Malacanang sources told local daily Rappler that Duterte will likely accept the invitation from Putin, who he regards as his hero and idol.
In a report, the daily said Philippine officials were already making arrangements for the impending visit and that they were only just waiting for their Russian counterparts to set a date.
The [Russian] President invited, of course, our President to visit, Philippine National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr was quoted as saying.

(12,645 posts)Despite all of Duterte blusters, the majority his country and the corrupt elite who exist in the upper levels still depend more on Western support (from post WWII) than they do on support from other countries closer to them. If Trump's "business partners" are gaining influence in Philippine political circles, then it behooves Putin to tie up loose ends there and wrap that country up.
China's not going to be happy.
I'm thinking since he's pretty much finished neutering the West by inciting Nationalist activity and destabilizing social bonds and economic compacts, Putin's long view would next be to set up to take down China's growing global political threat.
Since neither Japan or Korea trust Russia, I expect he's waiting until Indonesia and Malaysia tear themselves apart internally with their religious civil war, then step in; the PI would be a good base to take control of trade and politics in SE Asia. That's why we held on to it.
The Russians - and Soviets have culturally desired proxies and buffer states to keep them isolated or in control of their own international activities.
Those who don't understand what happened in the past are going to keep reliving it.

(12,645 posts)Putin's concern has always been his personal power and legacy, and is pretty much limited to his lifespan or maybe that of his direct heirs. He's still a KGB Bureaucrat at heart.
China's concern is the continuance of their cultural survival over centuries. The 19th and 20th centuries were traumatic for them.
