http://www.propornot.com/p/the-list.htmlSo many are from a list I used to maintain back in the day when I was a moderator that I believe I can vet their processes. A few are old enough and are also on the (now defunct) Franklin's Hate Directory which was at one time the gold standard. Maybe unfair to label them as both Russian Propaganda and Alt-Right, but the distinction is definitely blurred at this time.
Am hoping people are not surprised with a few, but there has been a long history of these sites and their progenitors trying to mainstream hate and anti-science.

(26,403 posts)There are some issues with the list as I think they are only listing sites which reference articles from a small curated list of sites or users.
So, if I quote an article in an attempt to debunk something, it may end up on their list as a promoter of Russian propaganda. I suspect it comes primarily from use of their Chrome privacy extension which of course is not setup to understand context.
That said, back in the day of moderating, I did use a graph to determine a relationship and then curated based on context. My own list is about 75% of this list - the difference being those there for a lack of curation (Truthout.org), or those which have come on line since I last updated things. I have noticed there are quite a few sites that are not on this list, probably because they are still pushing out their own hate/alt-right context and thus would not be on the limited graph being used as criteria.

(53,951 posts)It takes some digging, but eventually one can get to the rotted, putrid bottom. I am disappointed "Franklin's Hate Directory" is defunct (has been for a few years, I still visit it on occasion). When I read the sites names all I could think was "Horseshoe!" and "Two sides of the same propaganda coin."

There is about 2 interlocking themes you can use to curate a seed list to build a graph (the relationship) between individuals, websites and the content they produce (videos, books, radio, etc.)
They include:
"Race realism" - A cover-all for anti-immigration, eugenics, homophobia, anti-Semitism, and other pseudo-scientific poppycock designed to handle fear of difference.
"Anti-Science/Conspiracy" - There is always some truth out there and we'll tell you what it is.

(8,000 posts)and many I'd not heard of. The anti-science makes sense but I never would have attributed it to Russian propaganda.
Thanks for this.

Who is to be held accountable for the accuracy of this information?
Generally reputable websites are transparent as to who is providing the information do they not?

Someone posted this in another thread regarding the list: http://www.alternet.org/media/washington-post-promotes-shadowy-website-accuses-200-publications-russian-propaganda-plants

(26,403 posts)If the website quotes one of their banned sites sufficiently enough, it will be added.
I suspect that Truthout probably quotes a lot from RT.com, or from another site which does.

(35,961 posts)I could propel DU into the list by posting RT news articles about the Asia/Pacific region, which tend to be pretty bog standard when compared to what the media here reports. Which is how JPR got on that list coz there's a few posters who link to RT a lot. Me, I've been very Russian troll over there by rabbiting on about seeing Crowded House in Sydney on Saturday night. Smirnoff, dos vidanya and all that.
When it comes to propaganda, I tend to steer clear of US and Russian media where possible and stick to the guardian, BBC and the Age or the Canberra times. And maybe I should reread Noam chomskys manufacturing consent coz it's been ages and that book is an excellent look at the media and self censorship.

(26,403 posts)There is one thing to be anarchistic and/or dischordant with what's going on, hopefully with the intent to interject an idea or behavior which causes people to think... Get that..
However, there has long been a push to accept a different meme which is being presented to those who wish to affect a change
Subtle difference between those who seek out something they already know and are looking to find the words vs those who are wanting to have things explained to them as they are seeking the spotlight.
And I do appreciate your steering clear of State provided propaganda. Chomskey was definitely against the Russian influence this cycle.
For the record, I am a Russian-phile, though not one one who agrees with Putin. Not by any stretch.
