Where did this canard that liberals called Romney and McCain racists come from...

and therefore they are crying wolf when it comes to Herr Drump's racism.

The rap on Rmoney was he was a plutocrat and the rap on McCain was his policies were wrong. I don't remember liberals calling them racists because they weren't.

"He's an arab"woman.

And yes. Romney was criticized on class issues.

And check out the who let the dogs out video. As awkward as that is he was still welcomed by the black community and had people taking pics with him.

meeting with a group of African American young people during a photo op made the comment, "who let the dogs out"

At least that is where I believe it came from.

In general the expression "who let the dogs out", refers to unattractive people. Is that what Romney meant?

As for McCain not supporting a day honoring MLK, he was definitely appealing to the racist vote.

That being said, there is no comparison to what trump has said, and backed it up by who he has appointed so far.

There is no ambiguity with trump

Seriously?

One has to have been in a damn coma during 2008 not to remember the outrage over McCain referring to Obama as "that one" during the debate.

Where were you?

Honest question: Do you honestly not remember the fallout from this?

But there weren't sustained criticisms of either men for their racism.

Hell, you might have even found a quote from be calling them racists. But it wasn't a sustained critique. Most of us opposed them for their policies, most of the time.

I did point out that Joseph Smith was a racist. That is factually accurate.

You wanted to know where the canard came from, so I pointed you an easy way to find examples that were reported on here. If that's not good enough, don't limit your search to DU.

They weren't anywhere near as overt as Trump, but they definitely broke out the dog whistles. "People who don't want to work, who want the government to take care of them, who don't want to take responsibility for their lives," that kind of stuff was the muzak of the Romney campaign.
