Many of us knew, long ago, that this guy was psychologically unfit to be president. We knew it, but it didn't matter to his voters. They loved the orange menace, and nothing was going to stop them from making him their fuehrer in chief.
And if you think they have any regrets, wake up. They have not yet seen the instability of the man they voted for. They are not ready to walk away from his "Millions of fraudulent voters" insanity.
On December 19th, the Electoral College will vote for him to be The 45th President of the United States. And there is virtually nothing that any of us can do about it.
Given this reality, and given what most of us know will follow, there's really only one question. What do we do now? That's the question we need to focus on.
So let me say this. We must, must drop the bitterness and sense of defeat. We must find a way to slow down or stop, not only Trump, but the entire GOP agenda that is about to come into being. It's an agenda that will destroy what most of us have always called "America."
I don't have any answers to offer. However, we are facing an intolerable situation that must be opposed, somehow, in some way. All I can say is this: Focus, think, submerge your hatreds, and help to spread ideas to defy the inpending tyranny.

(24,392 posts)much, much worse - before they get better.
Our best shot in decades in stopping the RW agenda in this country was Hillary Clinton. We were on a leftward path, with huge advances in human and civil rights being made in this country. We were about to break the ultimate glass ceiling by electing a woman president. We looked poised to take back the Senate, and to determine the way the SCOTUS would lean for the next 20 years.
All that did a 180° when people didn't come out to vote, or made a protest vote against Hillary by voting third party, especially in swing states where every vote was crucial (the people who voted third party in safe states because "my state always goes D" are equally to blame, because they spent the fall trashing Hillary, and in this day of social media, the effect of publicly trashing people crosses state lines in a microsecond. Who knows how many people in WI and PA and FL voted a protest vote against Hillary because "their state always goes for the D in presidential elections?"
Yes, our very best shot came and went, even with Hillary winning the popular vote, big time. The sad fact is that she won that vote in spite of everything thrown up against her, when she should have swept the EC as well based solely on her qualifications for the job. We will NOT have this same opportunity again. History is against us: Ds do poorly in midterms, so 2018 is lost. That leaves 2020, which is 4 years away and means 4 years of the Ds being blamed for every R catastrophe we will suffer and marginalized politically, not only by the Rs, but by the media as well.
So by all means, get active and mobilize. But you better go into this prepared for a long and disappointing slog, because our moment came and went, and moments like that only happen every 30 years or so. For those of us who were around to experience Nixon's presidency, Hillary truly stood at the crossroads of a huge change toward progressive-ism that we had been waiting decades to see realized. There's no reason to believe this new wait will be any shorter.

(15,027 posts)Pence is next in line for the presidency.
The Speaker of the House is the next in line behind Pence. That's Paul Ryan.
The president pro temp of the senate is then next in line. Whoever. A Repubclican.
Then the cabinet, starting with the Secretary of State.
Your honest hope is useless since the Republican agenda will take place.
As a final thought, better to keep your "honest hopes" to yourself. There are things that should not be posted on line. Enuf said.

(19,803 posts)I get the succession of power.
I seem to remember reading about it in school.
I appreciate your patronizing attitude though.
Oh and I can wish people dropping dead anywhere, sorry if it offends any tender sensibilities.
I would like to see all republicans drop dead, all conservatives and all maggot voters.
Most rich people can as well.
