"He will never again be allowed on a Delta plane, reads an internal memo from Delta Air Lines CEO Edward Bastian, dated Nov. 28 and obtained by CNBC News.
Last week, a video circulated online of a man yelling at other passengers about the president-elect and Hillary Clinton, Trump's Democratic rival for the White House.
We got some Hillary bitches on here? the man asked in the video.
Its your president. Every goddam one of you. If you dont like it, too bad."
The memo also said it is refunding the fare costs to the passengers who were on the flight.

(26,259 posts)People as unstable as that guy demonstrated himself to be, should be on a watch list.
I don't remember reading if this happened before departure or during the flight, but the passengers seemed to be doing a great job of ignoring him. However, I can't believe that the flight attendants didn't immediately jump in to intervene.
I'm flying Delta, next month, connecting out of Atlanta. I hope this will deter anymore deplorables from going on a vile harangue at a very captive audience, but they are pretty clueless.

(115,674 posts)while the plane was still at the gate. If so, the flight attendants (3 on a B-717, I think) would probably have been near the forward door of the plane helping the passengers board and preparing the galley, and the pilots would have been busy, too - the captain would be in the flight deck getting the plane configured and the first officer would have been outside doing the exterior preflight check. If the crew were busy at the forward end of the airplane they might not have heard the guy's rant at all, and didn't intervene until someone complained. If they didn't actually witness the outburst, they might not have felt comfortable 86-ing the guy. I think they should have, but I'm also glad Delta made it right for the passengers who had to put up with that behavior, and that they banished the d-bag from future flights.
Siwsan
(26,259 posts)I know you don't automatically get banned from them all, but I think it would be erring on the side of caution to have a shared list of problem passengers.
Statistical
(19,264 posts)I mean people have been bounced for quietly texting in Arabic and this guy gets to go on a rant for minutes and resume his seat. Come one Delta train your crews a little better or fire them and replace them with people who are competent.
Siwsan
(26,259 posts)Although it sounds like he was removed from his seat, for a while, and probably 'talked' to, he should have immediately been escorted off of that plane.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,674 posts)they should (or could) remove him. It sounds like he got a talking-to (giving the FAs the opportunity to decide whether he was drunk, in which case he would have been removed), and made to understand he had to sit down and shut up for the duration of the flight, but of course I agree that they should have booted him. I'm guessing from their memo that Delta will make it clearer to their employees that they need to be willing to remove passengers for that sort of behavior on the basis of passengers' complaints. Maybe other airlines (and other potentially assholish passengers) will get the message, too, on account of all the publicity this incident generated.
Siwsan
(26,259 posts)I would think every airline would want to know if a potential passenger had caused problems with another carrier.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,674 posts)Maybe each airline has its own criteria for who's too much of an asshole to fly on their planes? I'm not sure if it's even legal to disclose passenger names. (15,220 posts)While I believe that the passengers on that particular flight probably did the best thing by ignoring this prick, I'm not sure that I would have had the self-control to do that.
No one should be subjected to this type of behavior in an environment anywhere - much less in an environment where they have paid hard earned bucks to be. This sh** needs to get nipped in the bud, and I applaud Delta for putting this out.

(13,417 posts)This ban, while warranted, is symbolic only. He should have been escorted off the plane.
CincyDem
(6,351 posts)While I understand the appropriateness and why you say that - I go a different direction. To escort him off the plane would have been a statement by the captain (since that's who would have the final say). I like that this decision to ban him for life from a Delta plane was taken at a much more substantial level. It wasn't just a single pilot exercising his judgment in the moment - it was the entire Delta system saying "Nope - not going to be tolerated on ANY of our flights".
And this guy might only be a once a year traveler, the next guy who thinks he should teach the HRC bitches a lesson in the air might be a twice a month business guy living in a city that is Delta heavy. Hit him with a lifetime ban and it's gonna hurt, as it should.
This sets the standard and, at least to me, is a lot more than symbolic...it's systemic.
Additionally, every delta employee knows now that the company has their back. It's a learning curve but I think the lesson here is less for the asshat and more for the pilots and attendants who are going to be on the front line.

(3,510 posts)You escort someone off and let them return when you think their behavior was a one-time incident. Like being drunk and unruly.
You ban them for life when you know the behavior won't change.

The reason he continued to be an asshole is because he knew no passenger would stop him, as they would get arrested.
This is how assholes are empowered - an audience and knowledge that anyone who fucks with them is legally going down also.

(1,668 posts)That the person who shot the video's name was released immediately, but this guy has to be crowd sourced? Isn't this part of the problem. They've gamed the system, because fundamentally they don't share those actual core beliefs.
They are "innocent until proven guilty." Ask yourself is that reciprocated? If so why does "the right to face their accusers" become the right to have their fellow travelers attack and intimidate their accusers.
The things that made us great have been used by the people who actually do hate our freedoms to destroy the republic.

(2,957 posts)1. If this ever happens in your presence, don't respond with a spirited Hillary defense. It may get you a ban from an airline as well. I was thinking (fantasizing) about how I would respond by getting all up in his face. I'd have been banned as well, probably.
2. Good for Delta for responding forcefully to an event that obviously made a whole lot of people very uncomfortable.
3. Trump and his supporters are the poorest winners I've ever seen. Losing the popular vote by 2M votes, losing seats in the Senate, losing a few in the house - you'd think an air of modesty or humility would swirl around the Republican establishment. But, it ain't so!

It would be interesting to see if a good lawyer could make a case against the employer for a passenger's mental anguish.
A stretch, I know. But a rich company might pay to have a claim go away. Then, they might think twice about hiring blowhards like this.
