Ohio State Attacker Described Himself as a Scared Muslim

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/11/28/attack-with-butcher-knife-and-car-injures-several-at-ohio-state-university.html

"SNIP...........

University police tweeted about 10 a.m. to “run, hide, fight,” a common mantra printed on safety pamphlets for evading an active shooter. Police lifted a shelter in place at about 11:30 a.m. All classes were canceled for the day for the campus's 60,000 enrolled students.

Artan described himself as a pious and scared Muslim in an interview with the Ohio State student newspaper in August.

"I wanted to pray in the open, but I was scared with everything going on in the media," he told The Lantern after transfering from Columbus State Community College. "I'm a Muslim, it's not what the media portrays me to be. If people look at me, a Muslim praying, I don't know what they're going to think, what's going to happen. But, I don't blame them. It's the media that put that picture in their heads so they're going to just have it and it, it's going to make them feel uncomfortable. I was kind of scared right now. But I just did it. I relied on God. I went over to the corner and just prayed."

NBC News's Pete Williams reported on-air that Artan made a Facebook post lamenting the treatment of Muslims worldwide just before the attack on Monday morning. NBC News reports Artan was born in Somalia and moved to Pakistan with his family in 2007. Artan came to the United States as a legal permanent resident in 2014.

kill anyone but that is simply because he didn't have a gun. It was bad enough when the authorities had to scour the internet to stop nuts from creating more nuts but now the president elect is doing it. Or making it easier of jihadi recruiters.

I was wrong to assume it was a reaction to Trump. So I was wrong on that. But it seems he did try to exploit the fears Trump has caused. Trump has a rotten policy on Islam.

Trumps rhetoric and the resulting attacks on muslims will lead to more nutbars acting out. It will be easier of jihady recruiters to box the nutbars into hurting innocents.

He could even be a recruiter himself. Maybe that is why he gave the story to the newspaper. We don't have enough details yet.

Yep, rhetoric like his is great for recruiting extremists, I'm sure.

I'm also concerned with how easily baited Trump is. The man seems completely unable to control his impulses in terms of defending his ego-- even when it's in his own best interest to do so. Can you imagine what he'd do if one of his namesake towers was his by a terrorist explosion? He can't even ignore a mean tweet from a retired comedian.

Everyone knows the proper response to being scared is to vote for Donald Trump. And I'll bet the damage from that reaction will be a lot more than can be accomplished by a scared guy with a knife.

He was exploiting what Donald Trump has said about muslims. The jihadists are already exploiting Trumpos words.

Trying to blame this on Trump is just more of the BS this guy was pulling in that interview.

Esp. since the perp here wrote in his pre-killing spree post (right before he started the rampage this morning) that he was angry about Muslims being killed all over the world.

You might as well blame Obama, who is now president and has been president for close to 8 years, and is, as CIC, very responsible for US military involvement in areas around the world.

But Obama is not responsible for today's rampage, and neither is Trump. The guy who did it and the people around the world who are committing these atrocities and acts of violence are responsible.

I have Muslim friends. They are very kind and decent people. They do not approve of, like or endorse the deeds of individuals such as this would-be mass murderer.

If any of them were scared for their safety, their response would surely not be to randomly kill people.

I am furious with you because you appear to me to be trying to use this for your political purpose, without regard for truth or the pejorative effect on a group of totally innocent people.

I really, really believe that what you tried to do here is unethical, wrong, and just plain low-down mean.

that before any religion. I call them nuts everywhere above. There are nuts in every religion. And they will exploit Trump's words and actions (against muslims in general) to incite violence amonst themselves (themselves being nuts). 1 to 2 % of the population are psychopaths. A small percentage of any population are vulnerably mentally ill who can be exploited by the psychopaths (given a shared grievance (Trump's words and actions) and a shared aspiration (religion)) into becoming terrorists. Surely we can talk about how much easier it is to make the nuts (I include the psychopaths and the mentally ill they exploit as the terrorist nuts for these purposes) act out as terrorists. Nothing inherent in muslims. That is my point. If Trumps starts covering muslims in bull****. more acts will happen because the grievances will be stronger. Stronger for ISIS on the ground in the middle east killing muslims, stronger for lone terrorists to self radicalize irregardless of their religion or if they are exploiters or true believers (delutional and being used). Don't know why we can't talk about it. The experts warned Trump as soon as he started attacking muslim immigrants. That is my point.
