General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsGen Petraeus was directing events in Benghazi before, during and after the attack.
But GOP had zero interest in blaming Petraeus for how he handled his covert operations there. Not when they could try and pin it on Obama before the 2012 election.
That didn't work. OK
so by Nov 2012 every GOP senator and congressperson knew Benghazi was a covert CIA operation under the direction of Gen Petraeus who had dozens of his agents and operatives on the ground there before, during, and after the attack. But
.they also know that a WH is not going to give up its CIA under any circumstance and it would take over a decade for any relevant documents to be revealed, if at all.
Shift blame to Sec of State Clinton and the State Dept.
Attack her on this for the next four years.
Now Gen Petraeus may, ironically, be moving into the position of Sec of State, after letting Republicans and Trump spend 4 years laying all the blame for HIS operations onto Sec of State and Democratic nominee Clinton.
Please reread news reports from Nov 2012. Even the media knew that Benghazi was a covert CIA mission being directed by Gen Petraeus, but, they chose to pretend otherwise as GOP congress was promising them something they couldn't resist - a 4 year spectacle attacking Hillary Clinton relentlessly.
Let's keep reminding them that some of us will not forget the TRUTH
..or forgive the LIES.
I urge you to read the Nov2012 report in the Wall Street Journal in its entirety.

CIA officials in Libya made key decisions during Benghazi attacks

CIA Takes Heat for Role in Libya
When the bodies of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans killed in Benghazi, Libya, arrived at Andrews Air Force Base after the Sept. 11 attack, they were greeted by the president, the vice president and the secretaries of state and defense. Conspicuously absent was CIA Director David Petraeus.
Officials close to Mr. Petraeus say he stayed away in an effort to conceal the agency's role in collecting intelligence and providing security in Benghazi. Two of the four men who died that day, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, were former Navy SEAL commandos who were publicly identified as State Department contract security officers, but who actually worked as Central Intelligence Agency contractors, U.S. officials say.
The U.S. effort in Benghazi was at its heart a CIA operation, according to officials briefed on the intelligence. Of the more than 30 American officials evacuated from Benghazi following the deadly assault, only seven worked for the State Department. Nearly all the rest worked for the CIA, under diplomatic cover, which was a principal purpose of the consulate, these officials said.
.
Nearly eight weeks after the attacks, a complete accounting hasn't emerged in public view. The brunt of the public criticism for security lapses has so far been directed at the State Department, rather than the CIA, which, by design, operates largely in the shadows. Critics in Congress say the CIA has used secrecy in part to shield itself from blamea charge officials close to the agency deny.
This account of the CIA presence in Benghazi sheds new light on the events, and how the essentially covert nature of the U.S. operations there created confusion. Congressional investigators say it appears that the CIA and State Department weren't on the same page about their respective roles on security, underlining the rift between agencies over taking responsibility and raising questions about whether the security arrangement in Benghazi was flawed.
The CIA's secret role helps explain why security appeared inadequate at the U.S. diplomatic facility. State Department officials believed that responsibility was set to be shouldered in part by CIA personnel in the city through a series of secret agreements that even some officials in Washington didn't know about.

(58,785 posts)detail died because he made a basic tactical mistake. With literally thousands of militia groups prowling Libya, most of them anti-American, he stayed too long in one unsecured position. ALL of our consuls and embassies around the planet are mini-fortresses for a reason, and they should have been safe in one of them that night.
I have a great regard for Stevens, he was a fine, dedicated, and brave man who wanted to help a sustainable nation arise from the revolution. But this was not about all these extraneous details being argued over. Stevens made a tragic mistake. RIP, and let the Republicans be the ONLY ones who twist and exploit these men's deaths for political advantage.

An honest assessment of what happened in Benghazi would be good for the American people, and good for the integrity of our nation's governance, but, not so good for GOP candidates around the country.
GOP opted to lie for 4 straight years.

(7,133 posts)Benghazi was a CIA screw-up from start to finish, but you didn't see Trey Gowdy hauling in Petraeus or Brennan for an 11-hour hostile interrogation or endless other investigations into agency emails or who said what at 11:56 versus 11:58 and all that other b.s.
It should have been obvious to any honest person - CIA is responsible for paramilitary ops and security, not the bloody State Department! Republicans never had any real interest in getting to the bottom of what happened, they just wanted to politicize the deaths of four people to make Clinton look bad.

Romney repeats sharp criticism of Obama after Benghazi, Cairo attacks
By Philip Rucker September 12, 2012
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Crises overseas tend to create moments of joint resolve back home, a time to pause from the daily bickering of partisan politics. But as news was streaming in about attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions in Egypt and Libya, Mitt Romney broke from that protocol.
Statements that the Republican presidential nominee made slamming President Obama led to a day of tumult for Romney, with leading voices in his party criticizing him and his top aides scrambling to prevent further damage.
The situation started Tuesday night, with Romney accusing Obama of sympathizing with anti-American interests in the Muslim world a common line of attack from the Republican.
But the timing of the statement in the middle of the ongoing incidents in Libya and Egypt led to an outburst of criticism that built as the night went on and intensified after Romney reiterated the charge at a hastily staged news conference here Wednesday morning.

(113,037 posts)used the knowledge (that a WH would protect the agency and all its operatives in the region facing ongoing dangers) to push a narrative that would serve their narrow electoral interests. HRC was always a peripheral figure to the events in Benghazi and yet she became the ONLY focus for blame by a GOP congress well aware that every charge they made against her was a complete lie.
The hypocrisy is beyond breathtaking.
During all the Benghazi hearings, they all knew it was a CIA operation, but they continued to blame Hillary Clinton for political advantage.
