Homeschool mom crushed by moral dilemma after son sees male CoverGirl wearing makeup

When 17-year-old James Charles was named the first male ambassador for CoverGirl this month, the company’s message was simple: “All of our CoverGirls are role models and boundary-breakers, fearlessly expressing themselves, standing up for what they believe and redefining what it means to be beautiful,” the makeup brand said in a press release. “James Charles is no exception.”

But one mother did take exception to the brand’s inclusive message, penning an article for the Homeschool Conservative lamenting the impact a male CoverGirl had on her 6-year-old son.

“Mommy, why doesn’t daddy wear makeup,” 6-year-old Mark reportedly asked his mom Sarah.

“Both of us were caught off guard, we didn’t know how to answer,” Sarah wrote. “I don’t know why, but the most logical thing we could think of at that moment was to say, ‘No, that’s a girl.’”

When it became apparent that Charles is in fact a male, she told her kid, “Daddy doesn’t wear makeup because makeup is for girls.”

“Well why is that boy wearing makeup?” her son pressed Sarah wrote about the “moral dilemma” generated by her child’s inquisitive nature:

“Do I lie to my son? Or do I tell my 6-year-old my full opinion? I thought about lying and saying, ‘That’s how his eyes really look.’ Or, do I tell the truth and have a deeper discussion with him? Maybe, ‘That’s the way his mommy and daddy chose to raise him. But, that’s not the way we are choosing to raise you.’

Does a parent end it there? Or continue to say, ‘That is sinful and wrong. He shouldn’t be doing that, and his parents are wrong.’”

Your dad doesn't wear makeup because he doesn't want to wear makeup.
Grown ups can choose if they want to wear makeup or not.

See that wasn't "morally" difficult.

Wow. Yes, how about the truth. This young man likes to wear makeup - end of story.

The thing is, one sentence like that and that might end the conversation. If not and the son asks: "So why doesn't daddy wear makeup?" she could say, "Well, it's just something that daddy has never done.

since Mommy has no clue about theater and television and the amount of makeup participants have to wear to be either seen by the cheap seats or look barely human under intense lighting.

Mommy also clearly doesn't know that what other people choose to wear or not wear is none of her fucking business.

Mommy is an ignorant twit.

Especially on TV. (Did several telethons in the Chicago market.)

Did a pretty glammy, pretty boy (not that i'm that pretty) thing during the early and mid-80's too, so wore heavy makeup every show. (Nearly 400, or around 12 a month for 3 years)

Yet, somehow it didn't change the world for the worse. Now that i know what a moral dilemma this is, i'm wondering why i didn't cause the apocalypse.

She's afraid to have a deeper and honest conversation with her son that different people in life choose different things?

Daddy doesn't wear makeup because daddy doesn't want to. Plenty of women don't, either. And while I am a woman who does wear makeup at times, and my husband doesn't, i'm not afraid to talk to my daughter about societal norms, how they may be wrong, and how people can break the gender barriers.

Pro tip: If you're a parent, you're in the embarrassing question business - and if you're not, you're doing it wrong.

What? Why would this have anything to do with his parents? Teenagers don't always base their decisions on what their parents think. He wears makeup because he likes to, not because of his parents.

I'm sensitive to this because I have a teen who is non-binary and gay and whose best friend isn't allowed to hang out with them anymore, and this is the reasoning her parents gave. "You chose to raise your child in this way, and we choose to raise our child in a different way." It's such bullshit. My child isn't gay or non-binary because of how my husband and I raised them. It's just how it is. Maybe my child is comfortable being open about it because of how we raised them, but I don't think that's a bad thing.

"I don't want to, and I don't need to. Besides, some of it is pretty expensive."

It's not a moral dilemma, it's finding the simplest answer. A question from a six year old doesn't require a PhD level philosophical and metaphysical answer. "Why doesn't daddy wear makeup? Because he doesn't want to and doesn't need to." Bam, question answered and your values are upheld.

Maybe the mom should ask why does she need makeup?
