As an aside, my god what a fine performance. A pleasure to hear, no matter what.

I have heard one recording, oddly enough, on my car radio on the way to work that was even slower.. Berlin and I now forget who conducted.. was not Gergiev, I dodn' think..

But that really slow tempo by the Berliers was the most frightening performance I have ever heard.. a true nightmare !!!

I've played it numerous times and ALWAYS wanted to go slower. As a former timpanist I got together with my assistant on more than one occasion and tried it but.. eh, to no avail..

the musicians were to each other, to the conductor... such a strong volt of inspiration underneath just the notes on the page.

I love it that you are a timpanist.

As a dear friend of mine and a Pulitzer prize winning composer said to me many years ago, about playing timpani.... " Play often and play loud !" I always tried to follow his advice.

Oh, I know both those timpanists. They are very good. Duddy?? Eh... maybe not so much.... LOL !!

Thanks...

left with the two handbags -- it looks like she's about to guzzle some Alka Selzer in her right hand while in her left hand she appears to be holding a flamingo's neck. Which is, you know, kind of odd.

"I don't think that anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center, take another one and slam it into the Pentagon, that they would try to use an airplane as a missile."

or this one?

"Oh, indeed there is a tie between Iraq and what happened on 9/11. It’s not that Saddam Hussein was somehow himself and his regime involved in 9/11, but, if you think about what caused 9/11, it is the rise of ideologies of hatred that lead people to drive airplanes into buildings in New York."
