The way I understand it is that Paul Ryan is proposing to privatize Medicare for workers under 55. But that means that in 10 years when those workers turn 65 they will not go into the Medicare pool. But most of the costs to Medicare are because of people over 75. Without relatively healthy people aged 65-75 diluting the pool the costs will become unsustainable. Not only that but presumably the Medicare payroll tax from younger workers will no longer go into the Medicare fund. So while costs are rising, income will be dropping for the Medicare fund. This will basically bankrupt the system in as little as 15 years, imo. Am I missing something here? It seems like basic math.

(35,699 posts)The idea is that if people are buying their own healthcare they will pay more attention to costs and that healthcare companies will compete more for customers. But there is little actual evidence of that. Healthcare companies do compete for customers if they are relatively healthy. If they are sick, not so much.
