(19,429 posts)A group of 15 to 20 veterans, some wearing camouflage jackets, staged the symbolic protest on Thursday evening to show their solidarity with opponents of the pipeline slated to carry oil from western North Dakota to Illinois.
Using a megaphone, police told the veterans to move away because they were trespassing. The veteran shouted back that they had served their country and had a right to be there.
The protest lasted about 40 minutes on a cold evening with snow on the ground, forcing the veterans to scramble over mounds of snow during the peaceful demonstration.

(41,919 posts)Feeling helpless. In case you may not have known: people are likely to start dying at Standing Rock-- if they aren't already:
The Standing Rock Medic and Healer Council released this statement: The physicians and tribal healers with the Standing Rock Medic and Healer Council call for the immediate cessation of use of water cannons on people who are outdoors in 28F ambient weather with no means of active rewarming in these conditions. As medical professionals, we are concerned for the real risk of loss of life due to severe hypothermia under these conditions.
Not to mention continuous mass tear gas, rubber bullets, as well as stinger grenades and LRAND (Long Range Acoustic Device) for 3 hours
Law enforcement also shot down three media drones and targeted journalists with less lethal rounds.
Police used a concussion grenade on a protector who was handing out water bottles. Her arm was destroyed and she is currently hospitalized, and has gone through at least two surgeries already in efforts to avoid amputation.
National Lawyers Guild legal observers on the frontlines have confirmed that multiple people were unconscious and bleeding after being shot in the head with rubber bullets. One elder went into cardiac arrest at the frontlines but medics administered CPR and were able to resuscitate him. The camps medical staff and facilities are overwhelmed and the local community of Cannonball has opened their school gymnasium for emergency relief.

(6,344 posts)I have already forwarded to others. I know the words written are (sadly) true. Democracy NOW! and Thom Hartmann have reported these very actualities.

(41,919 posts)On Facebook. The water protectors are relying on social media to keep the protest going strong, to keep in in the news when the media wants to drop it--I remember that anytime I'm tempted to sneer at social media --If it weren't for social media--we wouldn't be hearing about what's happening . As far to often happens to those whose voices have been disregarded or silenced

(42,696 posts)Florida Seminoles voice their support of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in opposition to
the DAPL. They are about as far away in miles from North Dakota as anyone can get.
There are articles plus an editorial in the Seminole tribal newspaper.

If you're moved to help, especially financially, carefully check who you're giving money to, and make sure they aren't some fucking scammer looking to cash in on other people's courage. There's a lot of them running around right now.

(6,344 posts)I was thinking they could use those special socks that wick away moisture keeping feet warm. Sounds like a project-campaign.

(6,344 posts)Just think, these are the very people being assaulted by police and oilmonger's 'security'. The majority of Water Protectors are women and children!
Thank you for this beautiful picture.
