Democratic senators call on GSA to break Trump's D.C. hotel lease

Democratic Sens. Tom Carper of Delaware and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts are calling on the federal General Services Administration to break a lease agreement with President-elect Donald Trump on his new D.C. hotel to avoid conflicts of interest and legal violations.

The senators say the lease GSA negotiated with Trump Old Post Office, LLC, a private company owned by Trump and his children, is “likely impermissible” when Trump becomes president in January. The Trump International Hotel, formerly the Old Post Office Building in Washington, D.C., opened in October.

Trump announced he will hold a Dec. 15 news conference to discuss his decision to leave his business “in total” to focus on the presidency.

But Warren and Carper, in a Thursday letter to GSA Administrator Denise Turner Roth, wrote: “While the details of this announcement remain unclear, any financial arrangement that places President-elect Trump or his children in charge of the Trump International Hotel will still result in a conflict of interest for GSA as it manages a lease agreement that financially benefits the President.”
