and had a really good time. We spent Friday afternoon/evening/night at the Art Basel downtown across the train tracks in Wynwood.
That was quite an experience - both the graffiti at Wynwood and the art on display were fabulous..
It was good to see people making some money hustling every imaginable thing including coconut water.
Got some free drinks and we supported the food trucks at Wynwood yard.
One of my nephews worries about gentrification with good reason - lots of original homes had for sale signs. Still it was loud and exciting - I was most impressed with Hebru Brantley's work and there was a French glassblower whose work was mind blowing. There were lots of artwork attacking Trump.
We were able to talk to some of the artists. Damn this planet has talented people.
Saturday afternoon we went to see Loving. I cried even though I knew they would win in the Supreme Court. Then we went to Dadeland Mall.
As you can see this was a well needed cleansing trip to enjoy our families and chill.
Now it's back to reality.

(268,916 posts)It was a beautiful graffiti done by the Obama hope and change artist Shepard Fairey and one with me standing next to one of Hebru Brantley's huge pop culture dolls. He sent them to his cousins.
They won't be posted here

(17,099 posts)I had to leave too "go away for a while" because I got caught up in the Miami of the mid-eighties. Now, I'm living in San Francisco, but I still have connections with Miami. Still an amazing and incredible place.
I'm glad you enjoyed yourself in Miami. I can't wait 'till the next time I get back there.

(268,916 posts)The vibe in Wynwood was lovely Friday but Miami is always interesting. I guess having young folks who like hanging out with us helps - one of my nephews knows the cultural spots better than all of us and he has convictions about issues so he keeps it real. He's an intelligent kid with a great sense of humor.
We had a blast just when we needed that

(26,619 posts)I haven't seen the film Loving yet, but did watch the documentary on HBO.. It's amazing. Real footage of the real people. I fell in love with Mildred. Impossible not to. I hope the actor who plays her does her justice.

(268,916 posts)The acting was good -it made me really sad - simple folks who just loved each other.
I liked the guy who played Cohen - his enthusiasm was palpable.

(26,619 posts)because they were funny, especially Mildred. She'd smile and melt your heart. It's such a simple story about simple people, like you said. Did they include the part where she wrote to Attorney General Robert Kennedy, and he sent her to the ACLU?
I turned 20 in 1967 and remember this case very well.

(268,916 posts)the movie - she was funny and that smile was real and Richard was just an uncomplicated man who loved his wife and family and was comfortable around African-Americans. Little did they all know what they were doing for others.

(268,916 posts)and we happened to be there for the festival weekend. It's great having nieces and nephews who actually want to be around us old folks and show us a good time. I loved it.
