President Obama has been the best thing that happened to this Country in the past, almost eight years now. His approval rating is at an all time high. You would never know that by reading DEMOCRATIC UNDERGROUND. To this day I am reading posts trashing him. Gawd, you people never give up. He has been trashed for years, by the GOP (One term President. You Lie. Ape. Not an American. He does not love this Country. Boy. N***er.) and by people that call themselves Dems here (POSUCS with hundreds and hundreds of RECOMMENDS!)
We are on the cusp of moving out of the light into darkness. We have our fears yet don't know the depths of despair in which we will sink. Under tRump we will lose it all. Our ACA. Medicare. Medicaid. SS. Our Environment. Rights. All. The tRump has declared war on all that are non white men. He has declared open hunting season come 01/20/17. If you are a woman. black. PoC. Jew. LGBTQ. Muslim. aged. different. tread carefully, you have a bulls eye on your back. Stick as close to your friends and family as you can. Watch for abuse around you, help them.
All I said may well be a moot point the psychotic deranged man with his angry puerile 3 am tweets has the nuclear codes. None of us will survive WWIII.
One way or another many people will die. That is a fact.

"The Democratic and Republican parties are tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum, they both adhere to an ideology of greed and vulgarity."
Why should we work within the Democratic Party if we dont agree with anything the Democratic Party says?
I am extremely proud to be an independent. The fact that I am not a Democrat gives me the freedom to speak out on the floor of the House, to vote against both the Democratic and Republican proposals.
My own feeling is that the Democratic Party is ideologically bankrupt.
"One can argue that the two-party system is a sham."
I am not now, nor have I ever been, a liberal Democrat."
The main difference between the Democrats and the Republicans in this city, he said in an interview in Burlington in July with a Cornell student writing a masters thesis, is that the Democrats are in insurance and the Republicans are in banking.
I am not a Democrat, period.

(34,582 posts)is that none of our leaders or media gave a damn about what was going on out there until veterans started showing up. They (politicians) have to look good' or the cameras. (1,366 posts)President Obama came to the Standing Rock reservation and told us that he had our backs and the backs of our children. We gave him a name, he was adopted into the tribe.
He very well could have stopped what was happening before the Vets got there. And thank god that he did finally stop it, because it was about to get worse.
I have never been to war, but in talking to the Vets that were there before all the other ones came, it is a whole different story when you are facing police in full military uniform, who happen to be the same countrymen as you. It's daunting! I can only imagine how people that we are at war with feels like to see somebody in full US military uniforms and full permission to kill them feel right before a soldier takes their life. But to feel it from another that is not only from your country, but state and took an oath to protect and to serve the people of that state, it hurts, deeply. I hope you never know how that feels. And given the fact that WE Are all Americans, we ARE given the RIGHT to be angry, hurt, saddened, about the president and express it, is a first amendment right. That feeling that no one is speaking up for us again, that is quite painful!
I love this president, I love his beautiful wife and daughters, for the last eight years I felt that I could breathe, that finally, finally, someone understood our purpose in this country, the pride we carry along with 500 + years of being called a dirty injun, a dirty drunk injun. Not being allowed to participate in our own Spiritual beliefs until the late 70's, of only one side of history that ever got told, and our history is still not being told after all this time.
But, his telling us that "We'll let this play out for a few weeks" was extremely disheartening, then the water cannons in freezing temperatures came, and to us, it was nothing but another lie. You have to understand the amount of betrayal that came with that. There is deep rooted anger and pain. President Obama knew that, yet he still waited to act.
I still believe, that President Obama IS the best president in my lifetime. I am ever honored that I got to live in this time that he is our president. I honor him, I honor you for your loyalty to him, and to all on this site who do, he is a very good man, and I believe that he would have done more to protect us if it wasn't an election year. My heart tells me that.

(16,646 posts)I was going to leave this thread alone until you threw in that turd.
I'm glad he was president and not any of his former opponents. I'm more than sad who the successor will be. And I think he faced an incredible about of obstructionism during his two terms (the most incredible being this SC nomination. Anyone want to point out that Obama go more votes than Trump, and so did Clinton? Maybe "the people" did "make their choice" and it ain't who Trump is gonna pick). I'm also extremely grateful that he managed to keep himself AND his cabinet out of any real scandals. Strangely, most of his troubles came from Bush era hold overs (one of the mistakes I think he made).
That said, here are the "pink sparkle ponies" for which I hold him responsible
The Afghan war is still going on because he chose not to follow the advice of his VP. His first action there was to triple the number of troops.
He stayed in Iraq way longer than he needed too, and to what end? We're back anyway, and the place is a basket case. What did those deaths accomplish?
He classified all of the torture photos.
He "had the backs" of the people who committed torture and couldn't find a single person who did anything wrong in torturing the detainees.
He NEVER tried to "close" Gitmo. All he ever attempted to do was to move it. He still asserts the authority to hold people indefinitely without trial on his authority alone.
His "targeted killing" policy is dubious at best, and extremely dangerous at worst. They have a hard time demonstrating that it has particularly accomplished much at all, except to have driven the most disturbed people away from Al Queda and into ISIS.
His stimulus was too small by half at best. He completely ignored all of those who told him so and never tried to correct the problem. Instead he pursued the "Grand Bargain".
His policy of saving the banks, and letting the banks screw the mortgage holders in indefensible. That he ensured that the bankers got their bonuses, despite crashing the entire economy is completely indefensible, even though his former Treasury Secretary still tries to justify it.
He made fun of mandates as a candidate, and then advocated for them as president.
He declared that single payer "wouldn't work" here.
Rick Warren, need I say more. Right after Prop 8 no less.
TPP. He needed to keep the environmentalists and the unions involved through the whole process, instead of ultimately letting the corporations take total control of the job.
And probably the worst, and to a great degree what I hold myself responsible for the most, is that he didn't believe, nor understand what Hillary was trying to warn him 8 long years ago in the primary. The GOP wasn't going to work with him if he "reached across the aisle". You have to be prepared to force them into what needs to be done. I shoulda voted for her 8 years ago.
It's a sad day if these issues are considered "pink sparkle ponies". It's an even worst day if legitimate criticism is prevented here. Because then it just becomes a big echo chamber. Yes I have a high bar for the performance of the President of the United States. We all should. The minute we lower that bar, it all goes to hell.
ProfessorPlum
(11,253 posts)just because the guy is great and also charismatic, and has some really excellent policies, doesn't mean we shouldn't point out the problems, too.
he isn't the Dear Leader. it's a job that gets criticized, and there is a fair bit of stuff, even for the excellent Obama, that deserves to be noted and criticized.
It's not a black and white world (and pardon me for that metaphor).

These things aren't sparkle ponies, or pet issues.

(16,245 posts)I find it very telling that, if such policies were pursued by Bush (or now by Trump), they would be heavily criticized and rightfully so.
I don't get this idea that we are not to criticize the people we elect. To me, that is our job. Our job does not end in the voting booth. We do not and should not have blind faith in our leaders, no matter how smart or charismatic they may be. Partisanship for the sake of partisanship is really stupid. It's how we end up in stupid wars. Then again, I do have a serious problem with hero worship or adulation of any politicians regardless of their merits.

(15,313 posts)I feel like I'm such a tiny minority in that I get this, sometimes, and it's so frustrating. I don't understand why this isn't obvious. Especially now with Trump about take office. How is it not obvious that people will immediately feel protective when they feel threatened? And how is Trump just about not the biggest threat out there? I don't get it. I will criticize the live long day, but somehow I've managed to learn how to do it in a way that doesn't threaten allies. I've learned the difference between genuine criticism and destructive spoiling.

(7,770 posts)Amazing father. Amazing mind. Amazing husband. Amazing friend (I know he was to Biden) He tried. But his reaching across the aisle stick as you said as doomed us. Fucking doomed us. He is going to lose everything of his legacy and we all are because he wouldn't fight. Wouldn't even fire Comey afterwards with nothing to lose. Release the Putin-Trump ties. Fight to stop this insane madman from destroying us. So yes, he was great and he is letting us fall into ruins. So it's hard to feel the love as he leaves on his jet plane to his nice life. Where is the fight? I really believe we are doomed. I don't know if we will survive and he has to take some responsibility for it. It appears all he is doing now is shrugging his shoulders. Saw a preview of a Vice news special on HBO. He isn't going to do shit.
(and you succinctly added all that he did that was a problem-but I'm sorry not doing everything humanly possible-even quasi legal to stop Trump matters more than all of it-all of it-except maybe not prosecuting torturers-Ah America is shit isn't it I try to pretend!)

(16,646 posts)It was a failure none the less. Good intentions don't mean anything when your underlying decisions are wrong. Do you really think that any significant number of voters thought that when he campaigned on "closing" GITMO, they thought he meant moving it to Illinois? Do you really think Biden was wrong on Afghan policy? Did you read Geither's book on why he made sure the bankers got their bonuses? Do you agree with him? Do you agree with his assertion that single payer won't work here?
sheshe2
(83,616 posts)There were never enough votes for single payer. Not EVER. Even BS was not able to push it through in Vermont. Why? To expensive.
Sad you are here harping on Obama when you should be focused on our pResident elect. You remember him? He is the man that wants to take away ACA SS MEDICARE MEDICAID SNAPS VETERANS BENEFITS CIVIL RIGHTS MORE............ Yet your concern is bashing Obama.
Priorities?
zipplewrath
(16,646 posts)My priorities here is working towards moving the party forward in the correct direction. I can spend time here criticizing Trump, and I do occasionally, but when you think about it, it's really preaching to the choir and pretty much pointless around here. Elsewhere I spend a lot of time talking about Trump to those who need to hear it. Elsewhere, I spent a lot of time defending Obama against really unsupportable criticism. But I'm honest with them. I told them that I had many things of his to be critical, but I was pretty sure it wasn't what THEY though was worthy of criticism. Quite honestly, if you talk to a generic supporter of the GOP, the things I criticized, were often the things they DIDN'T mind that Obama did.
Just because single payer wasn't politically possible, doesn't mean it won't "work" here. And it sure isn't something that a progressive president should be declaring. And the reason it was "too expensive" in Vermont is because the money that would fund it is not available to them. It's busy paying for the ACA.
And criticizing the mistakes of Obama is not harping, it's called rational evaluation. But I understand you prefer something more like a fan club approach.

And if you think this election was lost because of the candidate, then you're probably one of the reasons why the TOS was in place to begin with. Way to ignore all the election tampering and the media propaganda.
zipplewrath
(16,646 posts)Do you have any significant evidence that election "tampering" or "suppression"? I understand the assertion, especially because of the voter registration and early voting changes. But the reality is that there hasn't been any objective evidence that it had any significant impact on the national races. All you're doing is feeding the right wing hysteria on this subject. They keep losing in court because they can't provide any real evidence of "voter fraud" to support their changes.
We lost because the party has been tone deaf for years to the political desires of a lot of people. And all sorts of democrats are trying to tell you that and you're still not listening. It wasn't just Hillary that lost, a lot of democrats lost, and have been losing for a decade or more.
Being a mindless supporter that never sees anything wrong with their candidates isn't a way to "support" them. It's a way to ensure that they ultimately fail.

And you were warned and did not listen. In fact, those that were sending out warnings were often banned, or alerted.
And I presume your snarky answer means, no, you don't have a shred of evidence for your assertions. And you will note that for all the valid kerfluffle over the Russian involvement, the CIA hasn't offered up any suggestion on how it actually changed the outcome.

(16,646 posts)Please tell me you aren't going the way of a conspiracy theory. You're making assertions and you've got nothing to back them up. You're making them because you need reasons to explain why an election was lost (many races by the by) and yet you ignore all the reasons that we DO know.
Look, she won more votes. It's very hard to win after holding the office for 8 years. The rise of "fake news" hasn't helped.
But we've had 8 years of economic expansion. The auto industry was "saved". Interest rates are/have been a historic lows. Unemployment is around 4%. And the opposition was the most unpopular guy maybe ever to run for office. And they couldn't turn that into a victory. Ya think maybe we over looked something the last 8 years?

(964 posts)People are so blind to the fact that we are living in very good times. They crave for a time when the stock market nearly rubbed out our retirement accounts, when gas prices were high, and our food and water were compromised with the industrial greed. Our president was the best thing to have happened, but all his achievements were downplayed. All his work to help the people were hushed just because he hadn't tooted his own accomplishments. Thank you sheshe2 for defending this saint of a man.
