Trump's tweet shaming startles corporate America
The president-elect has already singled out Rexnord, Carrier and Ford Motor for attacks over their plans to ship jobs out of the United States.
And on Tuesday he lashed out at aerospace giant Boeing over what he described as the bloated cost of the company's contracts to build presidential planes. His comments initially slammed Boeing's stock price and those of defense contractors across the board and sent shockwaves through boardrooms nationwide as chief executives worry they will wind up in Trumps crosshairs.
The concern among executives and free market conservatives is that Trump will tweet first and ask questions later if he hears about plans he doesnt like, potentially hitting stock prices, turning public opinion against companies before they have a chance to explain themselves and chilling investment.
Its the president of the United States, the man with the biggest microphone in the world, who just might suddenly one day single you out for abuse, said David Boaz, executive vice president of the free-market Cato Institute. This is like being Tylenol and discovering someone has poisoned your product. Its a sudden shock that will cause companies to be more conservative, more cautious. It hurts the broader economy because these companies wont be seeking to maximize their own profit and solvency.
(clip)Initially, defense contractors like Boeing expected to do well, given Trumps support for spending more on the military. But now there is concern that his effort to cut costs could eat into profit margins on government contracts.
I still don't trust him anymore than I did before, but I'm willing to admit liking his attitude toward big business abuses.

(115,660 posts)his ego and his money. Trump likes to use his position to bully others - corporations and individuals - who have insulted or criticized him in some way. Boeing's CEO criticized him recently; his tweet about the allegedly excessive cost of the new AF1 (which he exaggerated by about 3x) was aimed to punish Boeing for its CEO's lack of deference to him. It had nothing to do with trying to save the government money. Trump has no qualms about using the government's money for his own purposes.

(20,709 posts)Regulation needs to be systematic, not direct and selective intervention from the President. What Trump is doing is playing good-cop/bad-cop with companies in order to give him a "win" to tweet about. Saving 700 jobs at a time with presidential favors is going to do nothing for the economy.
And it will detract from what we really need, which is to make structural reforms to make the economy fairer. The direction we're headed will not help workers. All it will do is make CEOs kiss Trump's ass, which is what he wants.

(45,806 posts)doing...so far. His true motives could show up tomorrow AM, and I know that. I'm dealing with The Con the same way as I deal with my 2 Repug Senators & 1 Repug Rep. I call & write to them all the time criticizing them for some stupid vote they've made. BUT, every once in a while I agree with some little thing they do and I write to them then too. I tell them how often I disagree with them, but when I agree I thank them for that too.

(17,111 posts)He quotes bullshit about Boeing. Their stock drops 1BILLION thus hurting the stock & employees. He has never PROVEN he has sold his stocks so gawd knows what conflicts he has. In addition, this is a gift to those shorting this stock.
He is just lying and setting up scams. He is getting over on people like you by presenting it as a fight against waste. It's just a way to control others so he can get HIS cut somehow. He doesn't care about the broader consequences.
Watch what he DOES. HE lies all over the place and reverses course again and again.
