https://www.thenation.com/article/democrats-should-fight-all-of-trumps-nominees-yes-all-of-them/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=socialflowAs Donald Trump unveils his cabinet of deplorables, its getting hard to imagine how Democrats are going to pick their battlesthe warning thats become a cliché of Trump transition coverage (just google it). The Wall Street Journal reported that even incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says Democrats will pick their battles, as he singled out Trumps selection for Attorney General, Senator Jeff Sessions, as someone who would be subject to tough Democratic scrutiny at confirmation hearings.
And he should be; Sessions was rejected for a federal judgeship 30 years ago for his blinkered racial views and his persecution of black voting rights advocates in Alabama while he was a federal prosecutor. But Democrats should be fighting virtually all of Trumps picks. The president-elect is presenting Democrats with a political opportunity even before he takes the oath of office. The so-called champion of the working class is assembling a gilded cabinet; not only will it be the richest, ever, it features plutocrats whove presided over the hollowing out of the working class Trump pretended to care about. Party leaders should be shouting about this from every imaginable platform.

Maybe this will start to change after the holidays, when senators begin planning hearings for these nominees. There will be plenty of opportunity for rising stars to shine, by grilling nominees with strong research into their careers, their potential conflicts of interest, and their policy beliefs. But right now Democrats are missing an opportunity to brand the president-elect as a man whos betraying his base, right out of the gate. They should certainly pick their battlesa lot of them.

billionaires, generals, and wackos. Some fit into more than one of those baskets.

(6,409 posts)Fight those who are not worthy. Confirm those who are worthy. Assuming he nominates anybody in the latter category, of course. Not looking that way right now.

(110,950 posts)Too many generals. We shouldn't have to change the laws to accommodate his wishes.

(2,897 posts)The only way to prevent these nominees would be to convince vulnerable republicans not to vote for these guys. Dig up so much dirt that a vote for them would be a political branding... Then there needs to be a vote. Get each republican on board supporting them. Otherwise, Congress will just recess, Trump will exercise his right to make recess appointments, and the Republicans can shed any responsibility when it all goes to shit.

(9,895 posts)There is decency and then common ground and then the ocean of bullshit, lies, hate and boorish behavior that defines Trump. Nothing about the man, literally NOTHING, is admirable or worthy of consideration. He should own every single decision he makes AND THE RESULTS OF THEM, as the GOP should own every single vote and proposal he makes.
I am now on record as stating Democrats who offer to "work with the President-elect" will find such decisions and statements their very own "Iraq war resolution" votes in future campaigns. My support? It will NOT go to the "friends of Trump" bloc...ever
