I was so in love with Bernie's speeches and how he inspired me and I admired his impact on the world!
It has turned so ugly with Trump tearing down everything we have fought to have or to protect.
And the AltRight movement of nihilism. Keep fighting Pope Francis!

(27,801 posts)The Vatican event was a think tank meeting. One of Sanders' advisers is in the group (Jeff Sachs), and brought up Bernie's name for an invitation, which he duly received. The Pope did not intend to even see him and in fact was on his way to Lesbos to check in on a refugee crisis. Bernie somehow managed to bump into him, but it wasn't a meeting, and the whole thing was awkward as could be. I think the Pope even issued a statement on it.
The whole thing raised red flags for me because this Jeff Sachs guy is a very interesting character, who's been involved in austerity measures in places like Ukraine and Bolivia - he's an advocate of a "Shock Therapy" method, which pretty much doesn't work. I was curious how Sanders was even involved with that guy.

(4,490 posts)Sanders was there to give a speech at some conference, but the Pope had to head off to the island of lesbos. The Pope apologized for not being able to attend, but they had a brief 5 minute meeting in the morning before Pope Francis had to leave.

(18,250 posts)the predawn meeting in an empty courtyard, where Sanders waited for the pope to get out of of his car to say hello on the way to the airport. I wonder why the pope wouldn't allow photos.
"When I came down, I greeted him, I shook his hand and nothing more. This is called good manners and it is not getting involved in politics," the pope told reporters in answer to a question aboard the plane returning from the Greek island of Lesbos, where he visited a refugee camp.
"If anyone thinks that greeting someone is getting involved in politics, I recommend that he look for a psychiatrist," he said, laughing.
