Do you approve or disapprove of Trump naming a climate change denier to head the E P A ?

President-elect Donald Trump has announced he will nominate Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency. Pruitt is seen as a close ally of the fossil fuel industry. In 2014, The New York Times revealed that Pruitt and other Republican attorneys general had formed what the paper described as an "unprecedented, secretive alliance" with the nation’s top energy producers to fight Obama’s climate efforts. Senator Bernie Sanders said, "Pruitt’s record is not only that of being a climate change denier, but also someone who has worked closely with the fossil fuel industry to make this country more dependent, not less, on fossil fuels." For more, we speak with May Boeve, executive director of 350 Action, and Wenonah Hauter, executive director of Food & Water Watch.

Instead of a useless poll, rather you had asked for ideas on how we can best support the science of climate change. That, and what we can do to educate the ignorant with real world examples of climate change that are happening in our own country right now and how that is affecting their daily lives and impacting everything from the economy to national security.

It's not hopeless either:

At least 70 percent of Americans now believe that global warming during the last 40 years is real and supported by solid evidence, coinciding with the lowest percentage of Americans who doubt climate change, according to a new poll released this week.

Since you seem to be in the mood for polls this morning, here's one that is actually factual as well as useful:

Acceptance of Global Warming Among Americans Reaches Highest Level Since 2008

Quick and easy. US Representative Lamar Smith, Chair of House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology - and climate change denier - has a one question survey on his website about congressional priorities for the year. Please select Other and write in "climate change mitigation". His website is: lamarsmith.house.gov

Even if millions of concerned citizens did that, do you honestly think that Lamar Smith (or any other Republican for that matter) would ever seriously address the topic of climate change based on an online poll? None of them will ever stop the gravy train or jeopardize the money they get from the fossil fuel industry.

Other countries have been working on the issue for decades, and if we had started when President Jimmy Carter's first talked about the problem back in the 70s, we'd be the global leader in that field today instead taking one baby step forward and two leaps backwards year after year. Since most of us know that climate change exists, we can see the effects, we understand the long range impact, but there is no serious partnership between government, industry, technology, labor and the citizenry to change how we do things going forward.

if you think the results of a straw poll will make Lamar Smith throw off the the fossil fuel industry and champion sweeping climate change policies, I've got a lovely bridge you might be interested in too. Seriously, what do you imagine he might do to regarding climate change?

A more pragmatic effort and productive focus would be to support Dems who are already onboard and encourage them, and any other spokespersons, able to cognizantly open a factual dialog with the press and engage the public's concern and interest. As we have in the past, govt can forge long term alliances with science, technology and business leaders bring about the innovative systems necessary to bring about change.

whatever we can, whenever we can no matter how small. Of course I don't believe that a straw poll will affect Smith, but it's one small thing we can all do today. Tomorrow there may be another. We keep it up and we do not give up because the gesture is not "big" enough.

It's on their back, Pruitt wants to get rid of people and would replace they with robots, they don't sue.

He knows the real problem is there will be no labor to worry about.

know that I strongly believe that the collapse of global civilization from ecological disruption is both imminent and inevitable. I think we're well past the point of no return. But worse than that, I'm also convinced that the longer we keep up Business as Usual, the more horrific and devastating the final collapse will be. I believe that the only way to mitigate the looming horror is to collapse sooner rather than later.

Back well before the election when it looked like Trumpism was gaining steam, I tried to make a sarcastic silk purse out of the orange sow's ear. I suggested that his election would at least increase the chances of an early collapse of global civilization, and thereby mitigate some of the truly awful possibilities of the ecological end-game. I point to Pruitt's nomination as evidence that my nightmare is already in play.

Do I approve? As a human being of course not. As a representative of the broader community of life on this planet, with a view of millions of years rather than of a single election cycle ... maybe it will have some long-term redeeming value. Just not for us.
