And our Democratic leaders, including the President, sat on their hands all summer.
In typical Democratic Party fashion they apparently didn't want the "appearance" of partisanship.
That's what I'm gathering.
We need to look in the mirror and stop making excuses.

They are much more detailed in their discussions, but to simplify it...
Putin is dangerous and is screwing the US, AND Russia..
The US does the same thing.. well, true..
The EU threatens Russia..
Russia is a threat to the entire world.
HOWEVER.. ALL of them, every one, knows exactly what has happened. They knew it was happening long ago because they know Putin and the Russian political machine.

.and figure out how this has happened and even was able to happen. And I want something done and done quickly to investigate this and full transparency and there needs to be something done. This is a security breach and act of war. And I thought our members of congress and our President take an oath to the Constitution to defend the country and constitution from enemies FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC and we have a situation of both here.

(43,115 posts)Don't even know if politically he could use War Powers to nullify the
election and force a do-over in 2017, plus he'd have to deal with the
Russians - expel diplomats at the least, and the GOP Congress would
scream.
So he had no good choices, he has none now that I can see
What would you have him do?

(9,688 posts)The Post explains that the White House was so convinced by the evidence that Russia was trying to affect the outcome of the election that by mid-September, it decided that stronger action was needed. But White House officials were afraid that the effort would be seen as an attempt to affect the outcome of the election, so the administration wanted both parties to come together and criticize Russian interference as well as urge local governments to accept federal assistance in protecting the voting process.
The Democratic lawmakers all agreed that the threat of Russian interference needed to be taken seriously but at least two Republicans, including McConnell, pushed back.
The Post reports:
According to several officials, McConnell raised doubts about the underlying intelligence and made clear to the administration that he would consider any effort by the White House to challenge the Russians publicly an act of partisan politics.
. . . .McConnell has refused to comment on the reports about the CIA conclusions on Russias meddling in the election. McConnells office told BuzzFeed News that it would not violate federal law by providing classified information.
lark
(23,083 posts)Arrest drumpf for treason, that's the only thing that can be done, providing he has the real proof of drumpf colluding with Russia to steal the election. Repugs are traitors, they don't give a shit so Congress is out of the picture. This is a law enforcement issue, this is about the very survival of our way of life and constitution. Share the information with the world, this is more important than any intelligence sources, this is not only our survival, but the survival of the democratic world.

(9,688 posts)Someone said once (on DU?) that Obama plays chess when everyone else plays checkers.
Yes, he's known exactly what's going on since the summer (or whenever those 17 intelligence agencies made their report). When the White House first made mention of this stuff back in (??) July, I thought to myself, "Obama is so careful not to make accusations without factual support. For him or his staff to say something must mean that they've got truly damning evidence. :
And, since Obama surely received more information than what's reported, and earlier than we learned about it, he surely knows way more than we know, and he's known it for awhile.
I am positive that intelligence agencies have been hard at work throughout this period, and they that they and Obama are working on strategies.
I also am aware that Obama has been boxed in politically, because it would not have been in the Democratic party's or Hillary's interest ( in the country's, either) - if his accusations or actions could be dismissed as "partisan bias" or "election rigging." That's why he wanted bipartisan support (and should have received it, had McConnell not chosen self-interest and partisan interest over country).
I have confidence that Obama will come up with an effective response.

(23,083 posts)This is too important to get wrong.
I've been freaked out about this whole thing ever since hints of the Putin-Trump connection caught my attention about a year or so ago, starting especially with that photo of Flynn at Putin's table at the RT dinner.

The coup you posit was brought by right wingers and covered up by a GOP which is morally and pollitically bankrupt an ideologues on the left who sat on their votes. Does it make you feel better to include President Obama as a co-conspirator. So sick of this endless crap.
MBS
(9,688 posts)The Republican leadership and the Trumpites, on the other hand. .
My guess is that Obama (handy also that he is a constitutional lawyer) and the intelligence agencies (though presumably not the disgraced FBI) are working hard on an effective and constitutionally and diplomatically appropriate strategy to address this extremely serious, and unprecedented problem.
