When Al Gore emerged from his surprise meeting at Trump Tower earlier this week to suggest the president-elect was a good listener and maybe was keeping an open mind on climate change, there was hardly universal relief on the left. But there was a lot of suspicion that Gore had been played.
Within 48 hours, Donald Trump deepened those suspicions, naming Scott Pruitt, the attorney general of Oklahoma and a prominent climate-change skeptic, to run the Environmental Protection Agency.
The first rule of engaging with Trump is dont be a sucker, said Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club. Democrats need to remember that Trump will enter office as the most unpopular president in modern history. It shouldnt be that difficult a landscape to navigate.

(13,390 posts)AL Gore is not a fool. He went to make his argument knowing there was a possibility it was going to be ignored. Just as I did when I approached republicans to ask them to oppose medicaid cuts. We were playing long odds that cost nothing. I don't get why DUers want to deride him. He made a noble effort.

(12 posts)I agree that Al Gore is no fool. His fight back has already started with his salvaging of the conference on climate change's effect on health that the CDC cancelled. I think Trump is the one who has fallen for Gore's rope a dope trap.
