(637 posts)Russia has enough on its plate without attacking Poland.
The Baltic states would come first if there was an attack planned.

(58,785 posts)People literally wake up to find the Russians moved the border fence overnight and their homes are now on the Russian side. The Atlantic had an article last July about what Trump would do if these creeps became leaps.

(35,296 posts)In the late 1930s nobody gave a rat's ass about them.
In the '50s we had the "occupied countries" series of stamps, but by the '60s and '70s people were (still) denying that Eastern Europe was in any sense occupied.
Many on the West had difficulty accepting that the GULag was all that bad. This included many historians and poli-sci folk.
Recently a kind of cognitive dissonance hit NPR: They said how wonderful it was that Cuba sent soldiers to fight in civil wars in Africa. Saying this was a problem for the last few decades, because many of those victories led to repressive dictatorships. The Cubans were sponsored heartily by the USSR with materiel and funding and advisors. But the rhetoric had long been that these were people's movements fought entirely by the US and that the USSR wasn't involved militarily. Then, when the "right" side had won and the ADD American public had a good night's sleep they were just dictatorships that came out of nowhere.
It's okay to still be pro-USSR, as long as you're not pro-Russia, I guess. But while the current Russia may have been properly called a "foe" of American, even if a lot of prominent but wrong people said this wasn't the case, it's still doing better than the USSR did for many a decade. It's not even to the point of Lenin in the mid-late 1920s yet for repression, and he was widely regarded as a good guy in 1989 and 1990.

(99,710 posts)As a proud member of the liberal left I was never enamored of the Soviet Union and I am even less enamored of contemporary Russia. That doesn't mean I am unaware of the flaws of my own country. One can believe both.
Your comparison of Putin versus Lenin makes me think. The difference is Putin has nearly a century of hindsight. Neither are small d democrats. That is certain.

(3,788 posts)That is based on attacking Poland and The Baltics. The comments from the Trumpies/anti HRC are out to lunch. Some are that Trump has saved us from WWIII because he and Putin are "friends" and that Hillary is a warmonger while Trump is a naive peaceful little hippie

(18,570 posts)From Kaliningrad, on a very narrow front, the Ukraine and/or the Baltic States would need to be taken first.
Without the element of surprise NATO would have time to react and call on the US to honor the treaty. Given the 70 year history between the US and USSR/Russia, there is little doubt the vast majority of the American people would call for us to join the fight against the "Commies"

(35,432 posts)If Russia invades and Trump does nothing, then NATO is effectively defunct. If that happens, all Hell breaks loose in Europe. Do a quick study of European history, and you will see what hell looks like.
But, Hillary had an email server, so...
