The Gullibles
Some of them are "deplorable", applauding Putin's Puppet for being racist, xenophobic, misogynist.
But a whole lot of them are The Gullibles. They believes his lies. They believed that a man who spent his life conning students and ripping suppliers off, who had never shown any interest in helping his fellow man, who bought his steel from China and manufactured his stuff in China. suddenly decided to do something for the little guy in America.
He despises them except as flatterers and easy marks. He thinks they get paid too much.
He pretended to care about the common man but he filled his cabinet full of billionaires.
He claimed he would "drain the swamp" and Make America Great Again.
I think he is going to sell the swamp (have I got some GREAT swampland for you!) and Drain America Dry Again.
The Gullibles believed him, and they believed the fake news that surrounded him. They won't wear that label proudly on their hats and t-shirts, but that's what they were.
How do you wake The Gullibles up? Slap them in the face, say "Snap out of it!" Wait until they are suffering the consequences of their own actions, whether it be cancelled Social Security or rising unemployment or cancelled health care or the selloff of their favorite national parks?
Some of them automatically believe whatever comes from him. What did he do to earn their trust? Like members of a cult that want to believe that someone has come to save them, it will not be easy for them to face reality.
It doesn't matter whether they trust Hillary Clinton or Nancy Pelosi or Bernie Sanders or Chuck Schumer -- those politicians are individuals and voters are free to like or dislike them. It matters that they live in a room of funhouse mirrors, where made-up facts are displayed and reflected and repeated. When the mirrors come down, they will discover that they have no recourse against the toxic dump in their backyard, that worker rights will be attacked in the name of "economic efficiency", that the missions of the EPA, FDA, DOL, and HHS will be turned upside down, and possibly that a "strong-man" surveillance state is maintaining watchlists and blacklists so that they feel afraid to criticisize their leader.
The Gullibles heard what they wanted to hear.
How does one begin to deprogram on such a large scale?
And the media wanted this, right? They gave him all that free publicity.
