In a discussion about the investigation into Russian hacking of the 2016 election, former New York Times writer Judith Miller warned against Trump involving himself in the mess, saying it could be a tar baby for his nascent administration.
As Sen. McCain said, its pretty clear that the Russians did something, said Miller. And its pretty clear according to 17 U.S intelligence agencies what what they did helped Donald Trump.
As much as Trump might want all discussion of the matter to cease, she continued, its not going away.
Pres. Obama isnt going to let it go away because his full intelligence review guarantees that this tar baby is going to be delivered to Mr. Trump as a welcome present to the White House before inauguration on Jan. 20, she said.

(62,444 posts)While actually originating in an African folk tale involving a sticky trap, the phrase "tar baby" has fallen into the basket with "niggardly" in the Jeopardy category of "Words people don't know the meanings or origins of".
In the last go-round of this one, the general outcome was that it appeared to be a regional thing.

I did not know it had become a racial slur.

(62,444 posts)It comes as a surprise to a lot of folks, particularly given its origin in West African folklore, which was the source of the "Uncle Remus" stories brought to the US and handed down among slaves.
Given its usefulness as a reference to its original meaning, it is something of a land mine among speakers who are unaware of how it is perceived by those who are more familiar with a later meaning that was applied to it.
The first time I became aware of its use as a slur was in this SNL sketch with Chevy Chase and and Richard Pryor exchanging epithets:

Just another true Ameriklan.

But how hard is it to send Podesta a phishing email and get him to click a link to a fake Gmail page that asks him to reset his password?
