Jonas: A town this deep in the crapper's got nowhere to turn but GOD!
This is a quote from a 1992 film called "Leap of Faith" starring Steve Martin, Debra Winger, and Liam Niesen, even Meat Loaf and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
The dark cynicism projected by this movie reminds me of Donald Trump and the circumstances of his followers. Almost like the movie foretold recent events.
Long story short: A fake faith healer/evangelist (Steve Martin) gets stuck in a small town in the Midwest, mostly made of farmers. Families and the towns face financial disaster due to a drought. They flock to his show in desperation, believing he can deliver a miracle (rain, anything) to them. They are facing foreclosure and bankruptcy and give him their last dollars. They can't see he's a charlatan. And fast forward to reality: The same desperation exists all over the country. Fear trumped thinking. Trump is the embodiment of Jonas Nightengale. Only it's the political mixed with religion like scrambled eggs in this case.
And BTW, the town sheriff knows the evangelist/faith healer is a fraud, has incontrovertible proof and the folks don't believe him. Total cognitive dissonance. They were told but wouldn't listen.
