By sucking up to Donald Trump to get the Secretary Of State job he neutralized himself as a Trump critic in the future. Now that the job is going to somebody else he will look like a sore loser if he criticizes Trump.
As for me I'm happy. A Romney pick would have "normalized" Trump. Some things like cannibalism, necrophilia, and Donald Trump don't deserve to be normalized.

(51,308 posts)Amazing that someone in his life didn't point this out to him.
I'm no politician and I saw it happening from the get-go.
What a damn fool.

(5,733 posts)1 - Romney was a smokescreen, to make it seem to the media and the public that he was actually entertaining someone reasonable for the position of Secretary of State, using Romney's respectability.
2 - It was a lovely bit of revenge: Smile and smile, dine with him at the most posh restaurant, have multiple meetings - very publicly - and make it known that Romney was a top contender for the position.
Then very publicly drop him on his ass.

(10,893 posts)a Republican who is at least consistent in his/her beliefs and maintains his/her dignity. But people like Romney and Cruz get no respect from me as they come to brown-nose Trump after they came out so strongly against him in the primaries. They had me fooled that they were decent enough to never willingly associate themselves with him.

(2,839 posts)He was just a prop used to make Trump look more legitimate. Tillerson was the man all along.

(3,818 posts)Would be interesting to hear what a body language expert has to say. Trump is leaning in with hands hidden -- in charge and giving nothing away? Romney is leaning back -- both hands on the table, one hand in a fist -- holding back anger/resentment? -- the other hand open and down near Trump -- giving in/capitulating. The expressions on their faces are so telling. Romney looks sort of abashed, or as if he suddenly found himself caught in a trap, and Trump looks like the cat that swallowed the canary, with that knowing smirk on his face. Interesting placement of the upward-pointing champagne bottle behind Trump's right shoulder too.
