(21,734 posts)I don't think we have the fortitude or ambition to start over
. and then again
this is what half of the American "patriots" wanted.
Good luck to that.

(9,217 posts)We're finished.
I'm too old and tired to start over. Let the young ones wake up, get off their butts and fight for this country now.
I can't do it anymore.

Can you say that didn't happen?
lunatica
(53,410 posts)but I can say it doesn't mean he 'attacked our nation'. but in any case your blame is sadly misplaced. There are plenty of eyes on the Putin cyberattack issue. That's how we know it happened.

(94,299 posts)...under the parameters of our political system, people voted for this.
I had a private post-mortem briefing for one of the rust-belt States Trump won; Russian involvement wasn't mentioned as a reason Hillary lost.
AlexSFCA
(6,137 posts)people voted for trump after it was reported that the russians hacked dnc. And Trump's strong pro-Putin stance was on full display since the primaries. He even changed the GOP platform on the issue of Crimea. This is not a coup because trump was very open about his admiration of putin as many republicans (they are obsessed with him).
It's no shock the republicans aren't interested in democracy - they would be totally fine with one party rule.
The issue is that we grossly overstimated our democracy. We are a republic with strong corporate influence. We will be more like Russia where opposition is suppressed, permits to protesters are denied and government controls all media. In trump's case - he will control media through corporations.
It is treason, only if you consider russia as foe. trump is positioning russia as a key ally and no longer a foe. Welcome to alt reality.
Within weeks of inauguration, we may witness lifting of all sanctions against russia and encouragement of investments into Russia. Sad times for human right but good for business I guess.

(9,217 posts). . . is at best an Oligarchy.
US is and has been for decades an Oligarchy, bordering on full fascism (where corporations control the government)
LisaM
(27,792 posts)Only one thing was needed to tip the scale. Voter suppression, email nonsense, hacking BS that apparently only got leaked to hurt Hillary, the failure of the media to cover issues (in my opinion a large factor), the way the debate moderators fell down on their task - take away any one of those things, and the 77,000 vote gap that we, sadly, can't balance out with a 2.8 million vote advantage, vanishes.
Of course she should have won by double digits. So should Gore have. So should Kerry have. With the way the electoral college is set up, we have bigger hurdles than the GOP. It's unfair, it's been unfair for a while. It's difficult to combat a system that is set up to favor the opponent, especially when they get to knock people off the voter rolls at will. I know the Hillary camp worked to fight this, but it's a moving target.
If the only thing we have left at the moment is our voice, so we need to use it. If you have Republican reps, call and demand that they make sure things like Social Security, Medicare, and the environment are protected. If you have Democrats representing you, call and encourage them to hold the line.

(7,809 posts)happened because of a few hacks. It look a LOT of money over decades to deceive people, create false memes, corrupt or destroy honest useful media, destroy the middle class, create inequalities that led to the ability of the top 1% to control elections, place corporatists in power, create polarization and hate so that voters would vote against their own best interests, devalue education, etc.
'People voted for this' is to ignore a lot of what has happened intentionally.

(7,809 posts)among the most profitable in history. Oil and gas will own everything, including our government. Nearly free corporate reign for at least a few years, but the effects will be generational.
This is potentially a game-changing event in our country and probably for the world. The most powerful nation the world has seen is now wedded to the most profitable corporations the world has ever seen.
Rollerball here we come.

(7,809 posts)Putin's Rosneft oil company is #70. Five of the 35 world's largest economies are oil companies. Nations included. These companies had
oil men and oil women (Rice) in W's administration and look what happened.
Think other nations and other top oil companies are worried about Exxon, USA, Russia, and Rosneft ruling the world?
Is this what PA, MI, and WI were thinking?

(28,270 posts)Vladimir Putin the dictator of Russia will be the de facto ruler of the USA on January 20, 2017.
Trump will be his figurehead/lackey/puppet. The Russians already control the FBI via the traitor Comey and Trump is freezing out the CIA which proves to me that they are...not yet...infiltrated and compromised by the Russians.
America dies the second Trump is sworn in as President.
God knows what he and Putin have in mind for us but without a doubt it's not going to be good.
