Seriously, it's just unbelievable how my friends are handling the day to day developments.

I follow their posts on Facebook (For the ones I haven't unfollowed) and even the enlightened ones are going into deep denial or withdrawal from reality. I have one woman friend who is left-leaning who is withdrawing into Yoga zen, wishing away all the negativity from her life and focusing her attention on the positives of life. My military friends are suddenly praying to God to keep "toxic" people out of their lives. And one of them said it all with just one sentence on her timeline: "I just don't know."

How is everybody else coping with this calm before the storm?

I am a bulldog. I will not give up. Even if it cost me my life. Via heart attack or whatever. Because so many of my friends and relatives have died and been wounded in combat fighting fascism. Their graves are being spat upon by the GOP. They are also spitting in the faces of Americans who voted for Hillary Clinton. I can safely say that 2.5 million more people plus the others who voted for Hillary are pissed. That is the majority. It's Theocratic corporate fascism we are facing. Mitch McConnell, Bob Corker, Lamar Alexander and all of the other GOP actors are treasonous cowards for letting this happen. Mitch McConnell was paid back by having his wife appointed to the cabinet. He blackmailed Obama by saying he would frame the situation with the CIA pronouncement that Russian hacking was involved. Rex Tillerson is even worse. Screw it all. I will not stop I will not give up. I don't care if it takes 4 years are 8 years are 200 years. I will never stand for this.

I'm simply watching what's going on for now. Gotta know what's happening and I want to be a witness to history just as I've been all my life (I'm 68 so I've watched a hell of a lot of our history in the last 50 plus years). I need to be able to do what Rachel Maddow does. Put historical moments into historical context.

But I do escape into Netflix and other forms of entertainment because I've learned that emotional breaks are very significant in keeping me sane.

For one thing, it's becoming an opportunity to enhance my Photoshop collage skills.

I have signed some petitions and I keep a few people in my circle informed of news stories they might otherwise not see (since I've been unable to ween them of mainstream media, and I stay away from most social media). And I will continue writing letters to government officials, at least when it might do some good.

My wife and my Dad both have decided to ignore the news; she believes I'm obsessed, and he thinks I'm losing my sanity. So I've backed off sharing regular updates with them.

But I reminded my Dad of an Edmund Burke quote he used to have on his email signature:

First, they're probably in the first two stages: shock & disbelief alternating with anger. They just don't want to talk about it.

Second, passive-aggressive resistance is still resistance.

It sounds like your Yoga-Zen friend is taking care of herself so she'll be in good shape for the battles ahead. Your military friends wonder how they're going to survive in a sea of Trumpers.

Mostly, they're just not ready to talk about it.

While I fear for the future of our country, my personal day to day life hasn't changed one bit other the way I am trading in the stock market these days.
BOTTOM LINE HERE FOLKS:
Donald Trump doesn't have the power to make my life shitty.
Hillary Clinton wouldn't have had the power to make my life wonderful.
All that is determined by ME. I am responsible for my own life regardless of the political realities of the day.
So while we despise the political landscape right now, always remember that the quality of our day to day lives is in our own hands.

I belong too. Lots of walks by the beach (i am only 1/2 mile away)

First few weeks I was emotional eating a ton of sugary stuff until I came down with bad cold/flu, so that was bad idea. I am now still recuperating from that on couch by fire watching lots of series and cheesey Christmas movies.

Not watching news, but through fb friends and here I learn all i need.

I plan on not watching any of Trumps coverage for as long as i can. Watching Alex on SNL is as close as i get.

At first me and my family and friends talked the first week, shock and all, now we never talk politics. For my family thats pretty normal unless its time to vote but for my political friends not to talk isn't.

Everyone posting cute Christmas or funny coffee pics except a few hardcore political fb friends who post tons per day of all the horror that is happening with links to real news sites. I have been tempted to not look at their stuff but figure I can't hide my head in the sand.

I wrote on every Christmas card have a peaceful new year. I am hoping for some type of peace!

My ex was born in South Africa but is a US citizen now. I lived in South Africa for several years in the 90s. His brother still lives there and is extremely well-off. We've always been on good terms, but I'm making a conscious effort to make more friendly overtures.

Ex BIL has bought up quite a bit of property in Cape Town. Ex has indicated he'll be retiring there soon, taking up one of BIL's properties for a rental. It's reasonably inexpensive to live there. I've mentioned to BIL that if he finds a suitable property (he knows my needs), I'll crack open the 401(k) and pay him cash for it.

I still have my old residence permit, and enough in-law and step family to help me find my feet if I go that way.

That, and listening to nice storytime podcasts and audio books in place of news during the commute.
