so many details, way too lengthy to discuss here, the crux is that his racism/intolerance/increasing RW crap became too much to deal with. We've known each other over 40 years. We may never speak again.

(7,482 posts)my positions, but his have become increasingly rigid. The breaking point came this past week, when I helped him with some work he needed to do on some pricey rental property($3900 a week) he owns. He stated that only people who pay taxes and/or own property should be allowed to vote.

(7,482 posts)I tolerated it for what was way too long, in sake of long time friendship. But it did reach the maximum point this year.

(10,252 posts)Life is too short to endure the stress of a longtime friend dumping their hatred and stupidity in your lap. The person you knew 40 years ago is not the same person today. There are more compassionate and intelligent with whom to associate.

(6,066 posts)I haven't spoken to family since the election. Don't know with certainty who they voted for but I'm expecting the worst. I really don't have any clue how to defuse this ticking time bomb.

(28 posts)Unless absolutely necessary. This has been the situation since my dad died in 2008. They are Fox News addicts and believe everything they get from Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Drudge, etc. Even my 35-year-old nephew, who is well educated, is a racist pig.

(70,647 posts)A few months before I had found a web-ring of those shipmates, and at first it was all catching up and nostalgia. Then it turned out that all of them were wingnuts and that the main activity for the group was to trade wingnut chain letters attacking KERRY. For awhile I did some slamming back, but I detest arguing especially when it's clear the other side is just spouting parrot-points and personal attacks on "bleeding heart Liberals". So I departed with a final blast, and actually I haven't missed a thing.

(61,539 posts)We grew up together. Been friends more than 50 years. He's got a drinking problem and I knew he could be an argumentative jerk at times, but nothing prepared me for the vile racist, misogynistic, homophobic attacks. He never supported Trump but I could tell that he didn't care if Trump got elected and burned down the country.
There is a deep rage in some people and Trump tapped into it. Suddenly even so-called progressives are blaming minorities for all their problems.
