Bill Gates said Tuesday that President-elect Donald Trumps potential to bring innovation to the U.S. resembles that of President John F. Kennedys.
Gates, the billionaire Microsoft founder and philanthropist, told CNBC that Trump can lead the U.S. through innovation and compared Trumps ideas to Kennedys expansion of the U.S. space program in the early 1960s.
But in the same way President Kennedy talked about the space mission and got the country behind that, I think whether its education or stopping epidemics
[or] in this energy space, there can be a very upbeat message that [Trumps] administration [is] going to organizing things, get rid of regulatory barriers, and have American leadership through innovation, Gates said.

(82,849 posts)Car companies (for example) could make a lot more money if they didn't have to worry about being sued because their products blow up from time to time. If restaurant workers weren't wasting all that time washing their hands and following food handling regulations, they could serve a lot more food. Sure, there'd be some malcontent diners who insisted on getting poisoned from tainted food, but that's a risk Bill Gates is willing to take. While we're at it, let's loosen up some of those banking laws so that if Gates suddenly finds one or more of his bank accounts void of funds, he can be happy knowing that someone innovated their way to helping themselves to a big pile of his cash.

(26,403 posts)He said several things..
First he was talking about the opportunity Trump has, not whether or not Trump *will* use it correctly. Many CEO's talk about things in terms of the "opportunity", so this is Bill Gates just using that language form.
One of the things I think he and other CEOs are doing is trying to give Trump a vision. To be honest if Trump did have a vision comparable to JFK he could do some awesome things. However, I'm not seeing anywhere where is giving any outlook pro/con of whether Trump will do this.
If anything, I think that he's also showing what Trump *could* have had and will have lost. Gates no where gives an opinion of where it will go.
To be honest, it's almost like Olivander describing both Harry Potter and Voldemort. One used great power for good, the other for evil even though had Voldemort wanted, he could have been an effective agent for good. Or Anakin as Jedi or Darth Vader.

(17,302 posts)I came here to say much the same thing. You nailed it, IMO.
Jeff Bezos was sitting among the tech elites meeting with Trump. I'm not sure about Bill Gates, but there's no love lost between Drumpf and Bezos. These corporate presidents and CEOs have to deal with Drumpf and his policies now. They cannot avoid him. Some are clearly choosing to hold their noses. Get more flies with honey than vinegar, etc.
Hopefully Don the Con doesn't give them too much leeway though. I think that should be the greater concern for all of us non-one-percenters.

(26,403 posts)Great point about no love lost between Bezos, Gates, Cook, etc. and Trump. Being a *good* CEO means you have to deal with what life deals you. They are very pragmatic individuals when times call for it and will work with what is dealt with them. I think Gates has a vision of what he wants as a legacy (in this case Education being one of the top ones) and will work with Trump to preserve it.
Most of Trump's cabinet are Ayn Rand rejects meaning they are pretty much defined by their lack of altruism and view of legacy. Most either inherited/married into wealth, or earned it in a highly sociopathic way. I think this differentiates significantly from the likes of Gates, Bezos, Cook, Buffett who did it by making something from something lesser.
