It's was (as still is) a mechanism to allow the STATES to elect the President of the United STATES. Some people just cannot accept the fact that the PEOPLE do not elect the President, the STATES do.

If we don't like the system we can change it. The mechanism to change it exists. Just do it.

The only reason that it was included in the Constitution was to protect smaller population (slave) states from larger ones, and the reason it remains is that it was not an issue, until recently.

And the reason we will keep it now is that it works as designed, and protects the (minority) party in power.
