Jerry Brown is a freaking treasure

Jerry Brown strikes defiant tone: ‘California will launch its own damn satellite’

Gov. Jerry Brown, rallying a room of scientists Wednesday with his most heated rhetoric yet on the topic, suggested California would defy the federal government should President-elect Donald Trump impede the state’s efforts to thwart climate change.

“We’ve got the scientists, we’ve got the lawyers and we’re ready to fight. We’re ready to defend,” he said to boisterous applause at the American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco.

Brown struck a more forceful tone than he has since the election, suggesting the energy and enthusiasm in the room for him would be needed in the “battles ahead.”

“Keep it up,” Brown implored the gathering. “Don’t flag. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

At one point, Brown warned against proposed budget cuts under the new presidential administration that could effectively eliminate earth-observing satellite programs.

I have great respect for both men, even though my own politics are far to the left of theirs, and my perspectives as an environmentalist extreme.

I'd much rather have a competent governor or president than a venal incurious and easily manipulated meat puppet like Reagan, Bush, or Trump.

I'm also some kind of Luddite who know's the world might have been a better place had fossil fuels been banned in the 'seventies.

What we now call economic "productivity" is a direct measure of the damage we are doing to the natural environment and our own human spirit. That's not a popular position. In these times nobody is going to get ahead in politics by telling their constituents they intend to shut down a large fraction of the automobile and airline industries, remove highways, and encourage increasing population densities in urban and suburban America so that more of us might live in walkable cities, and fewer of us commute by automobile.

Nearly all of us are hypocrites when it comes to fossil fuels. We know fossil fuels are harming the earth, and ultimately ourselves, but we can't quit.

It'seems mostly out in the smaller towns and rural areas.

Kansas City and St Louis are pretty normal. Johnson County Kansas is big city people. Conservative but not crazy.

He was comparing gritty Chicago politics, the sort Obama would be familiar with, to the national stereotype of hippy fruits and nuts California politics. Royko later rescinded the label but the name stuck, even became an object of California pride.

When Royko coined the label maybe he didn't understand that, behind the scenes, California politics are Byzantine and Machiavellian. California politics sometimes make Chicago politics look like a pillow fight. Politicians like Jerry Brown and Barbara Boxer are bad ass.

I am not the huge fan of Brown that I was back in the 70s and 80s but Brown is still one of the best political leaders in the USA.

I was a strong supporter of Brown for POTUS in several election cycles.

In recent years Brown has taken some positions that I do not support.

However, hell yes Brown is correct in this stance (and Brown would have been a far better and more vibrant POTUS elect than Clinton, Trump or Sanders 2016).

Glad and proud to have Brown as Governor as a native and resident Californian (and life long Democrat).

It's not like they can just throw a space program together, especially without federal assets.

I don't think the Governor was serious.

Would you say or would you not say your posts have a mocking tone and if your answer is in the affirmative do you think that is a tone Donald Trump would applaud?

Thank you in advance.
