while he is the sitting president - especially if he doesn't divest his business interests.
My question is will we as taxpayers have to pay lawyers that defend him or will he have to use his own lawyers at his own expense?

(5,455 posts)Legally, once Trump becomes President, he becomes two entities: Donald Trump, the person and Donald Trump, President. The entity that Donald Trump, the person is responsible for paying his own legal fees; The entity that Donald Trump, President would have the DOJ handling the case.
What he can actually be sued for remains a matter of some question. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinton_v._Jones set the precedent that a President CAN be sued for acts that took place prior to him taking office.
Whether a President can be sued for acts that took place WHILE in office remains to be seen. My sense is that while in office Donald Trump, the person can be sued, but the case would have to wait until he left office. That is something that would probably end up in front of SCOTUS.
