PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) Without backing up his claim, President-elect Donald Trump is blaming Islamic terrorism for deadly violence in Turkey and Germany and vowing anew to eradicate their regional and global networks.
Authorities in both countries were still investigating Monday when Trump issued a pair of statements condemning the incidents. The White House had already described the episode in central Berlin, in which a truck rammed into shoppers at a Christmas market, as an apparent terrorist attack.
Trump called the brazen shooting of Russia's ambassador to Turkey as he attended a photo exhibit "a violation of all rules of civilized order." He added that a "radical Islamic terrorist" had assassinated the diplomat, Andrei Karlov.
Turkish authorities identified the gunman as Mevlut Mert Altintas, a member of Ankara's riot police squad, and said he was later killed in a shootout with police. Altintas shouted in Turkish about the Syrian city of Aleppo and also yelled "Allahu akbar," the Arabic phrase for "God is great."
In Berlin, where at least 12 people were killed, Trump said the Islamic State group "and other Islamist terrorists continually slaughter Christians in their communities and places of worship as part of their global jihad."

Fuck this asshole. He's as much of an enemy to this country as ISIS is. I'm on NOBODY's fucking side.

(3,076 posts)The incident in Turkey was a political assassination, and the incident at the German Christmas Market appears at first blush to be the result of mental illness. Trump, as usual, has no idea what he's talking about

Denying reality to fit an anti-Trump narrative is counter-productive and will only affect what we say negatively when something really momentous happens.
The shooter in Turkey was spouting terroristic threats, saying this was done in the name of terror organizations in Aleppo. He was recorded doing this. The fact that he killed someone of more political importance than random people in the street is immaterial to the fact that he's a terrorist.
The guy in Germany copied the terror attack in Nice just last year. He killed the driver, stole the truck, and drove it into a crowd of people, where he could kill or maim as many people as he could.
99.99% of your fellow Americans would consider both of those to be terror attacks. Convincing them otherwise would be fruitless and unproductive, and would make them immediately discount your opinion and interpretation in the next situation that arises.

The Turkish one, yes, though it is also related to Russia's involvement in things Russia involved itself in.

(37,748 posts)What objectively makes something "look like" terrorism? Or do you simply have no idea what you're talking about as well...?
Personally, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the former.... no doubt you'll supply us with objective, peer-reviewed analysis of what a terrorist attack looks like, compare and contrast it to this recent attack in Germany, and illustrate both relevant and striking differences.
Or the third possibility.... being the consistent and continued narrative of the absurd. But naahhh.... that can't be it, right?
I hate to admit it but he maybe right; https://www.yahoo.com/news/police-truck-attack-killed-12-berlin-intentional-054020219.html and http://nypost.com/2016/12/19/isis-claims-responsibility-for-berlin-christmas-market-attack/. At least about the Berlin attack.

(18,628 posts)Wrong, perhaps, but he's building up a "terrorists are everywhere" propaganda narrative that will allow him to take complete, unobstructed control of the armed forces and use them to cement his power everywhere.

Though of course he sets the narrative. No evidence needed. Just make the conclusion and the deplorables will parrot it.
