TRUMP PICKS BILLIONAIRE HIGH-FREQUENCY TRADER FOR ARMY SECRETARY

Over the past few days, there’s been an issue of grave importance that’s clearly been keeping Donald Trump awake at night. No, not a review of his Trump Grill(e) restaurant, though that’s been tough to take. Nor is it the matter of the Electoral College meeting today, though he’s obviously given that some thought. While those issues are big, this one is clearly bigger: had he, the president-elect who wants to be surrounded in Washington by “people who made a fortune,” stocked his administration with enough billionaires? The answer was clearly no, but this morning he woke up and did something about it. Per The Washington Post:

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated as his Army secretary Vincent Viola, an Army veteran who became a billionaire after founding an electronic trading firm and went on to buy the Florida Panthers hockey team.

Viola is a 1977 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., and funded the creation of its highly regarded Combating Terrorism Center after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. A former infantry officer and Ranger School graduate, he has pressed for innovation in cyber warfare, saying at a conference five years ago that the Army of the future will be built on a “gestalt of geekdom.”

A former chairman of the New York Mercantile Exchange, Viola in recent years turned his attention to high-frequency trading. Virtu Financial, which he founded in 2008, uses algorithms to trade small amounts—around $10, say—millions of times a day. Most important, Viola’s profit-making machine has helped boost his net worth to about $1.8 billion, a major prerequisite for consideration to sit at Trump’s table. It doesn’t make him the richest person on Team Trump, but it’s respectable and can give the next president some level of comfort knowing that he won’t have to talk to too many people not in the three-comma club....
