I tell you, that has been a problem in my party, Waters replied. That when were in power, were nice. We bend over backwards to work with people. Trump has stepped over everybody. He has no respect for his own colleagues, let alone those on the opposite side of the aisle.Hes called names, hes lied. Everything to show that he doesnt have good values and he cant be trusted, she continued. Why should we work with someone that we cant trust? Hell tell you one thing today and another tomorrow. As a matter of fact, those people who voted for him ought to be really concerned about the fact that he has already backpedaled on so many of the promises he made. And so, I have no intention of pretending everything is alright, that were going to work together.
As a ranking member of the Financial Services Committee, where he said hes going to bring down Dodd-Frank and hes going to get rid of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Im going to fight him every inch of the way.
Are you saying then that you would not sit down with President-elect Trump if he invited you to the White House to meet on common ground? Soboroff pressed.
Oh no, I wont go! Im not going to sit down with him, Im not going to go. Im not going to pretend. Im not pretending, Waters shot back before adding, Why should I trust him?

(16,920 posts)I think she SHOULD go - and lay it on the line as to what she expects - and she should let the public know what is being proposed and what (as we could/should expect) is SO wrong with any proposal.
You have to be in attendance to have a fight!
She DESERVES our respect AND support!!!

(8,684 posts)He is a self-admitted rapist and pedophile. He is a bigoted and xenophobic fascist. Why would you give a shit what he is saying? We are in a strange place in American politics and i will not vote for and will actively campaign against ANYONE that works with trump on ANYTHING.
Trump is a narcissistic, racist, bigoted and xenophobic fascist. We are either united in our fight against his agenda or we will all become a victim of it.

(11,841 posts)Without a majority, if they just stand on the sidelines theres no telling what will get passed. If they become involved, they could have some say in the matter. Remember he said all along hes a "dealmaker". I guarantee he is going to make deals with SOMEONE on the Democratic side to get something passed that he wants. But when that happens, HIS core supporters will be pissed because he's dealing with democrats. I give it 6 months, if THAT long, before his own backers start whining when that happens.
But to just take your ball and go home will accomplish zero
angrychair
(8,684 posts)I was saying that Democrats should not be negotiating or making deals with him or treating him with even an ounce of respect or accommodation. We should be fighting everything this fascist supports without question and with all the effort we can muster...every time. We should only refer to trump as a rapist and a misogynist and not by name.
By cooperating and engaging him in "deal making" you acknowledge him as a an equal and give him power.
This is my tag line and it will stay my tag line for the next four years or trump and pence are arrested and pushed out of office:
Trump is a narcissistic, racist, bigoted and xenophobic fascist. We are either united in our fight against his agenda or we will all become a victim of it.

(11,841 posts)Especially if he comes up with an infrastructure bill early on. That is something much needed which most Dems support & usually most R's oppose.
And I dont think theres much chance of Democratic leaders standing on the floor of the Senate or House referring to the sitting president, whethere we like him or not, using your preferred terminology. I dont see that helping get MORE Dems elected in '18. He's there & they're gonna have to deal with him in some form like it or not.
But come next month, we'll see what really happens. Maybe trump wont even be involved much in anything and it will be Pence everyone has to deal with. I think theres a good chance of that
angrychair
(8,684 posts)That is not their or his priority. More significantly, the infrastructure bill, as described, is dead on arrival. It is underfunded and deeply debt intensive.
Regardless of how some choose to refer to him it does not change the fact that he is a rapist and a fascist.
In regards to 2018: I am unequivocally confident that standing against trump will have an impressive impact on the 2018 election for Democrats. We want a strong, assertive and united front against the political monster the republicans have become.
I state this again:
Trump is a narcissistic, racist, bigoted and xenophobic fascist. We are either united in our fight against his agenda or we will all become a victim of it.

(526 posts)Sorry but what you are asking is what would have happened prior to the Regan Administration, that's when the Republican Party started that they wouldn't bring up a bill unless it had 100% support of ALL republicans. I still remember the Republican members holding up the vote to pressure their peers to 'get in line' or they will be shunned. This problem has continued through the Obama Administration, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/25/robert-draper-anti-obama-campaign_n_1452899.html. So if you think this President will be any more willing to "lay it on the line" then your not keeping up with todays new politics (http://occupydemocrats.com/2016/12/27/republicans-just-banned-1st-amendment-floor-congress). And with no cameras on the floor, it's bad enough that the paid for corporate media won't cover opposition news, the Republican Party will feel more embolden to do as they please. Don't forget Trump will elect the next supreme court judge, guess the Republican Party can do as they please since the will have the court in their favor. Look at how many times the Robert's Court voted for the republican party side against the American People.

(526 posts)I have been posting for some time now that we don't have a two party system, we have a system where your either vote for a republican (light) or a crazy republican. Don't forget after Regan got elected the second time many of the republicans felt disillusioned. So, they came over to the Democratic Party. This has continued, as has our candidates (Blue Dog Democrats), and changed our party dramatically. When the shifting of party begun I kept posting, and continue to post, we don't want you stay where you are and fix your party. But, the Democratic Party officials and the DNC love these people not only for their vote, which is minor, but for the money they bring in. Look at the amount of money in politics right now it cost billions to get the JOB of President which pays a few hundred thousands. This problem continues on down the line, look at your local elections and the money being spent by the parties to get down ballot people elected. Local officials get millions to get a job which pays a few tens of thousands, but the party expects voting on their bribe/election funding.
Back to the 'why aren't Democrats fighting back?' it's because we don't have a Democratic Party anymore. If you are a member of the Democratic Party in Washington, D.C. you are actually a Progressive/Independent. That is where the "real Democratic Party" has go to...

(11,119 posts)I keep saying that there aren't enough Dems in DC to stop or slow down ANYTHING! They may as well not even bother to show up til 2018...

(526 posts)Really do you really think that time will help? People keep forgetting that ever since the Republicans came to power they have rigged the system. Gerrymandering is a SERIOUS PROBLEM how else can you get more votes in the Senate, House and Presidency and still loose elections, not only that the party which looses, Republican Party, gains seats. http://www.politifact.com/texas/statements/2013/nov/26/lloyd-doggett/democrats-outpolled-republicans-who-landed-33-seat/
Our Democratic system has been under fire for some time now and it seems to only be getting worse...

(63,803 posts)I don't even think tRump is going to sit down with anyone except his family members Ivanka for sure he will have his surrogates pinch in for him, I think Pence will be involved with a lot of the decisions. tRump is too thin skinned and doesn't have a clue how government works. God, he needs to go.
Good for you Maxine Waters. All tRump does is tweet. Stupid man/child.

Trump is not to be trusted. Trump is less trustworthy than the average Repub, and that is a pretty low bar.
