And not just that: We need a fully-funded voter protection team at DNC that has tools needed to combat discriminatory efforts in states.

Perez wants a director at the DNC dedicated to fighting voter suppression full-time. #DNCChair http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/tom-perez-dnc_us_585bf1e4e4b0de3a08f4510e?4x4r6i9qnhk3z69a4i

(1,499 posts)Do the other candidates oppose this idea?
Do the other candidates think that GOP voter suppression is not a big issue?
I hope not because I will tell you from personal experience that the current party leadership, which has been in power ever since Bill Clinton (talking dominant political philosophy, not individuals, here), refused to lift a finger in resources, public support, or money to help the thousands of convicted felons (a majority of whom were black males) who were stripped from the voter rolls during the ChoicePoint purge in Florida before the 2000 election.
If ANY candidate for DNC chair (Perez, Ellison, Harrison, ANYONE) is unwilling to stand up for people of color out of fear of being "Willie Horton-ed," I can't support them.

(368 posts)His sole experience in campaigning was for a county council in a wealthy district right outside of Washington DC. That's not the experience needed for this job and at a scary time like this, we can't afford having a DNC chair needing on the job training. We need someone with experience campaigning, experience in fundraising, experience going across the country helping congressional candidates, grassroots experience, voter turnout experience. That guy would be Ellison.

(666 posts)Out with the old and in with the new. Under President Obama who was elected with a 50 state strategy he abandoned that after he was elected and the dems lost state offices around the country, so no we don't need Mr. Perez he is just looking for a job and besides he was in favor of tpp.

(7,006 posts)From DECEMBER 7, 2016, (or in other words, not new news) -- Thank You, Keith Ellison!!
In order to further their commitment and maximize my effectiveness, I have decided to resign as a member of Congress if I win the election for DNC chair, Ellison said in a statement. Whoever wins the DNC chair race faces a lot of work, travel, planning and resource raising. I will be all-in to meet the challenge.
Ellison has quickly racked up a series of key endorsements in the race. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and his successor Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) are behind Ellison, as are populist champions Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), along with more than 100 Democratic lawmakers."

(1,296 posts)A country does not have to be 100% democracy or 100% dictatorship. For instance, South Africa under apartheid was about ten percent democracy, as that was roughly the proportion of citizens who could vote.
If constitutionally qualified citizens are excluded from voting, or from having their votes accurately counted, then to those citizens, the United States is a dictatorship.

(297,154 posts)"The Democratic Party is at a crossroads, and it needs leaders with strong progressive voices as well as unique skills and experiences to lead the party forward. While there are a number of very good candidates in the DNC chair race, Tom Perez offers the party what it so desperately needs bold leadership and ideas, strong experience managing an organization at the state and federal level, and someone singularly focused on rebuilding the party across the country.
He understands the realities faced by hard-working families all across America who are desperate for a better life. Our members saw firsthand his passion and commitment to improving the lives of union workers as he joined with us to push for safer working conditions at poultry plants, and as he fiercely advocated in favor of the Overtime Rule. As Labor Secretary, he not only pushed for progressive reforms, he helped manage a multi-billion dollar agency with thousands of employees.
In light of the challenges the party faces, Secretary Perez has the experience and vision for the changes the DNC must make, and is the right leader who can make these changes happen. We enthusiastically support his candidacy."

Today it became known that the International Association of Firefighters, the main union representing American firefighters, has broken with the AFL- CIO and endorsed Tom Perez too:
"In a statement, Schaitberger praised Perez as a "a tireless advocate for civil and human rights" who can transcend what the union president called "a narrow focus on identity and cultural politics that alienated" some longtime Democrats from the party.
"Tom Perez is the person who has the right mix of personal background, progressive values, experience and total commitment to all workers, in all regions and states across the country," Schaitberger said. "To have Tom Perez as the Chair of one of our nation's two major political parties would be a significant victory for workers across America."

Washington (CNN) Labor Secretary Tom Perez is set to receive the endorsements of four governors Thursday in his bid to become the next Democratic National Committee chair.
Virginia's Terry McAuliffe, Colorado's John Hickenlooper, Rhode Island's Gina Raimondo and Louisiana's John Bel Edwards are announcing their support for Perez.

In a statement, Hickenlooper said the two worked together to reform Denver's police department when Perez worked at the Justice Department.
"I can tell you firsthand that Tom's work has made an actual difference in the lives of countless Americans. I've watched him lead large, complex organizations to success, and I know he will do the same at the DNC," Hickenlooper said, calling Perez "an organizer, a progressive, and someone who delivers results."
