(2,297 posts)African animal parks are loaded with them thanks to folks like Ron Magill. What he does is fascinating. Farmers report a cheetah problem. The conservationists go out, catch the cheetah, put an electronic tag in it, and sell it to a game park for around $100k. Farmer gets half. Better than the farmer just killing it. They used to use a neck collar, but tourists hated taking pics of wild animals with neck collars. So now they implant a tag the size of a beer can inside the cheetah. Lets them track it and send tourists to the exact spot to take pictures. As it turns out, cheetah really do well in animal parks. The fences allow them to trap their prey easily.
Ron is famous as a kind of cheetah whisperer. He had his own fairly rare King cheetah that he took around the US. 4th grade show and tell etc. He has pics in motel rooms of him in one bed and the cheetah in the other. With a room service cart between them. He does a lot of public speaking and fundraising for his projects and I highly recommend seeing him if given an opportunity.

(29,225 posts)The scientist I was reading earlier was saying that the problem is the disappearance of land range the cheetahs need to live successfully.

(2,297 posts)Cheetahs are thriving on the land that has been set aside for them. Believe me, the issues will get worse as the continent becomes more developed. When is the last time that a bear walked through NYC? Yet, you go to the suburbs and they are pests.
