1. No family

but several friends and colleagues

3. I lost my lifelong friend John to HIV/AIDS this summer.

He was only in his 30's

My sister in law is battling breast cancer and she is only 35.

It has been a bad year.

7. I've been to too many memorial services this year.

But on the brighter side, I did get to hang out with many of my living family members and (life-long) friends.

Ex husband, best friend, suicide, age 53
Ex boss, sudden heart failure, age 54
Ex co-worker with the same boss, pancreatic cancer, age 52
Friend of 35 years, stroke in sleep, age 54

5. My BIL, massive heart attack, age 55

No warning at all. If he wasn't feeling well he didn't tell anyone. His wife (one of my favorite people on earth) is devastated as is my husband at the loss of his only sibling. You're not supposed to bury your little brother. And right before Christmas last year my brother lost his wife, only 53, to complications of damaged heart valves from childhood rheumatic fever. Trivial in the scheme of things, but the loss of my beloved cat Freddie (my DU alias) only 9 from FIP still hurts too.

6. Last year was my awful year. This year we had a birth

During 2015 I lost my sister on January 9, my mother on February 4 and my aunt on September 9.

Then at 5:28 am on January 1, 2016 my beautiful little grandniece was born.

My losses, this year, were people whose talents made my life so much more enjoyable.

8. I got to chase my 4 Y.O. grandniece around at Thanksgiving

My uncle (sudden heart attack) and my grandmother in the same week.

Only year in the 2010s that I haven't had a loss was 2012. To go back to that year.

11. My 96 year old mother died in January from a blood clot in her leg.

Horrible year.
